The Timeline is Fracturing!
Look at this sentence. A criminal verb shift occurred here, breaking the natural laws of time. Can you spot where the timeline broke?
"The detective creeps into the room, unlocked the safe, and took the file."
Case Diagnosis:
creeps is in the Present Tense .unlocked and took are in the Past Tense .To solve the crime, all verbs must stay in the same time zone!
Verdict: The reader gets temporal motion sickness when you shift without a reason!

The Golden Rule of Verb Tense
Keep it Present
If you start a sentence or paragraph in the present, stay in the present .
Example: "The dog barks when the mail carrier arrives ."
Keep it Past
If you start in the past, stay in the past . Most narratives use this structure.
Example: "The dog barked when the mail carrier arrived ."
The Exception: You can shift tenses only when there is a clear shift in time marked by transition words (like yesterday, tomorrow, next week ).
Keep your timeline aligned! Do not mix past and present unless the calendar changed!

Tense shifts are hardest to catch across long paragraphs. Watch out for sentences that break from the anchor tense.
