| Camel Rule (25%) | Split after the single consonant when the open long sound fails to make a word. | First syllable is closed; first vowel flexes to short sound. | cam/el, cab/in, plan/et, lem/on, rob/in |
| -C + le |
| Turtle Rule | Count back 3 letters from the end (consonant + l + e) and slash before that consonant. | Final syllable is stable; vowel 'e' is silent, produces /ul/ blend. | tur/tle, can/dle, sim/ple, pad/dle, ti/tle |

Syllable Code Breakers • Instructional Guide
Phase 1 (4 min)
Explicit Review
Display Slide Deck. Choral chant the 4 steps: Spot, Bridge, Slash, Flex. Model breaking traffic (VC/CV) and silent (V/CV) on whiteboards. Explicitly reinforce that every syllable contains one audible vowel sound.
Phase 2 (10 min)
Guided Chunking
Distribute Syllable Code Breakers Worksheet (Part 1 & 2). Students highlight vowels, draw bridges, label 'C', and slash. Have students read syllables in isolation before blending. Ask: "Did you use Rabbit, Tiger, Camel, or Turtle?"
Phase 3 (6 min)
Connected Text
Students independently complete the "Decodable Case Brief" sentences. Monitor for fluent decoding without hesitations. Students self-correct using context clues to verify the flexed vowel. Collect for quick data entry.

| Splits consonant digraphs or blends (e.g., *dish/et* or *sec/ret*). | Treats every consonant letter as separate phoneme. | "Stop! Digraphs (sh, ch, th) stick together like glue! Keep them as one unit on the bridge." |
| Pronounces *cabin* as "cay-bin" and does not realize it's incorrect. | Fails to flex vowel sound from long (Tiger) to short (Camel). | "You decoded the Tiger rule cleanly. Does 'cay-bin' make sense? Flex that vowel: try the short /ă/ sound." |
| Counts silent 'e' in *-cle* as a separate vowel sound. | Looking only at letter orthography rather than auditory syllable count. | "Remember the Turtle Rule: consonant + 'le' is a locked team. Count back 3 letters from the end and slice!" |

19 - 22 Pts (85-100%) Mastery
Next Step: Advance to 3-syllable words and morphological units (prefixes un-, re-, dis- and suffixes -ment, -ful, -less).
15 - 18 Pts (68-84%) Progressing
Next Step: Focus on VCV flexing (Tiger vs. Camel). Have student whisper the open sound first, then test if it sounds like a real word.
< 15 Pts (< 68%) Intensive
Next Step: Re-teach with concrete manipulatives (index cards cut with scissors). Solidify VC/CV Rabbit before adding VCV words.
