The Storyteller's Pātaka
Cooking up Creative Sentences • Grade 1 • Term 3

Lesson Concept
In New Zealand contexts, a pātaka is a traditional storehouse used to keep precious food safe and dry. In this lesson, students learn that their minds are creative storehouses packed with word "ingredients"—nouns (the food/base), verbs (the cooking action), and adjectives (the delicious spices). Students will "cook up" beautiful, expanded sentences to feed their readers!

The Hook: What is inside a Pātaka?
Gather students on the mat. Show a picture of a traditional Māori pātaka (Slide 2). Ask: "What do we store inside a pātaka?" (Food, crops, sweet potatoes/kūmara, fish to keep them safe and dry for the winter!). Explain: "Our brains are also story pātakas! We store precious, delicious words inside them. Today, we are going to unlock our pātaka to cook up a beautiful sentence feast!"

Modeling: Cooking Simple Sentences (Slide 3-5)
Introduce the three "ingredients" on the white board using physical word cards or slide animations:
The Noun (The Kaimoana/Protein): The main food. E.g., the bird (te manu) , the dog , the boy .The Verb (The Heat/Action): How we cook/move it. E.g., sings , runs , jumps .The Adjective (The Sweet Spice): Makes it delicious! E.g., tiny , happy , shiny .
Model writing a boring sentence: The bird flew. Then, open the story pātaka to grab some sweet spices! Stir in an adjective and expand it to: The tiny, cheerful bird flew high.

Guided Practice: The "Sentence Soup" Game
Divide students into pairs. Distribute the Sentence Soup Game Sheet . Students cut out the ingredient cards (or point and choose if not cutting).
Students take turns pulling 1 Noun Card (green) and 1 Verb Card (orange). They must place them on the pot to make a basic sentence (e.g., The frog hops ).
Then, they roll a die or pick an Adjective Card (yellow) to "spice up" the noun (e.g., The tiny green frog hops ).
Partners read their completed "sentence soup" aloud to each other, giggling at any silly combinations!

Independent Work: My Sentence Journal
Send students to their desks to complete their Pātaka Writing Journal sheets. Students write down their three favorite expanded sentences that they cooked up during the lesson, making sure to highlight or circle their adjectives, nouns, and verbs in different colors. Finally, they draw a picture of their favorite sentence in the "Sentence Feast" window.

Debrief & Reflection: Feeding the Whānau
Bring students back to the circle. Ask a few brave "chefs" to share their favorite expanded sentence. Praise effort: "Look how much food we have stored in our storytelling pātaka! We started with tiny words and made a huge sentence feast."
Support Strategies
Word Bank Assist: Provide a pre-highlighted word bank for students struggling to differentiate the parts of speech.Scribe Method: For students still developing motor writing skills, have them verbally "cook" the sentence while an educator scribes, then have the student copy.Color-Coded Tracing: Use physical colored blocks (green, orange, yellow) to model sentence building visually before writing.
Extension Strategies
Double Spices: Challenge advanced students to add two adjectives to their sentences (e.g., The quiet, sneaky cat slizard ).Add 'Where' (Prepositional Phrases): Encourage writers to add a "cooking pot" for where the action is happening (e.g., in the forest or on the mat ).Māori Vocab Integration: Encourage the use of Te Reo Māori words for nouns (e.g., pīpī /chick, kurī /dog) or adjectives (e.g., nui /big, iti /small).
Quick Prep Tip
Print the Sentence Soup Game on colorful thick cardstock if possible. You can laminate the cards for future use during Term 3 literacy rotations. Use small plastic bowls as physical "cooking pots" for hands-on sensory learning!
