Read the Story Passage 1
Barnaby was a tiny, friendly ghost who lived in an old clock tower. Halloween was tonight, and all the older ghosts were practicing their loud, spooky roars. Barnaby puffed up his chest, floated high into the air, and tried his very best. But instead of saying a scary "BOO!", out came a soft little squeak! Barnaby felt sad and floated down behind an orange pumpkin. Just then, three little field mice scampered past. Barnaby giggled, and his giggle sounded like ringing silver bells. The pumpkins on the porch began to glow with bright, cheerful smiles! "Look!" cheered the mice. "Your happy giggle made the jack-o'-lanterns sparkle!" Barnaby beamed with pride. He did not need a scary roar to make Halloween special.

Pip was a tiny field mouse with round ears and a bright striped sweater. Every October, Pip searched Farmer Bramble's patch for the perfect Halloween house. Most pumpkins were too bumpy, too prickly, or much too giant for a little mouse. Finally, under a golden maple tree, Pip spotted a smooth, round pumpkin with a curved green stem. Pip nibbled a neat arched doorway near the bottom. Inside, he swept the seeds away and laid down soft pine needles for a warm bed. He hung a shiny acorn cap over his doorway as a lantern. When the chilly autumn wind whistled through the fields, Pip curled up with a cup of warm apple cider. His pumpkin cottage was the coziest home in the patch!
