The Otter's Secret Pocket
Read carefully
Sea otters spend almost their entire lives in the cold ocean. To stay warm, they have the thickest fur of any animal on Earth. When they rest, they float on their backs like small rafts bobbing in the water.
When lunch comes, a sea otter dives to the ocean floor to hunt for crunchy clams and crabs. But how does an otter crack open a hard shell? It uses a rock! Under each front arm, an otter has a loose flap of skin that forms a pocket. An otter keeps its favorite rock tucked safely inside this secret pouch.
Floating on its back, the otter puts the rock on its belly. Then it taps the clam against the rock until it pops open! At night, otters wrap themselves in giant ocean kelp so waves do not drift them away while they sleep.
