Unit 9 Review
Part 1: Oral Blending Mastery
SAY TO STUDENTS:
"Eyes on me, Sound Scouts! Today we are going to use our ears to listen for every little sound in a word. I will say the sounds slowly. You will jump for each sound, and then clap the whole word together!"
Step Teacher Says (Pause between slashes) Word 1 /r/ /i/ /ng/ /er/ ringer 2 /s/ /i/ /ng/ /er/ singer 3 /s/ /i/ /m/ /er/ simmer 4 /s/ /u/ /m/ /er/ summer 5 /s/ /u/ /p/ /er/ supper CHALLENGE /t/ /r/ /a/ /sh/ (pause) /k/ /a/ /n/ trash can
Part 2: Tricky Word Deep Dive
Word: WHERE
Meaning: A question word we use to ask about a PLACE.
"Look at 'where'. We can hear /w/ /air/. But look at all these extra letters! The 'h' and 'e' at the end are tricky. We use 'where' when we want to know a spot or a place, like: 'Where is my coat?'"
Word: WHAT
Meaning: A question word we use to ask about a THING or action.
"In 'what', the 'a' sounds like /u/. We use it to ask about things, like: 'What is in your bag?'"
Word: FROM
Meaning: A word that tells us where something BEGAN or started.
"In 'from', the 'o' is sneaky and sounds like /u/. 'From' tells us where things start, like: 'This milk is from the cow!'"
Words: NO & SO
Meanings: 'No' means NOT YES! 'So' means VERY much.
"These are twins! In 'no' and 'so', the 'o' says its own name. 'No' means stay back! 'So' means a lot, like: 'I am so happy!'"
