Sight Word Scouts
Teacher Facilitation Guide

Objective
Students will categorize sight words by length (letter count) and spelling patterns (beginning sounds) to build fluency.

Warm-up: Room Detectives (5 min)
Challenge students to be "Word Scouts" and find a word anywhere in the classroom that has exactly 3 letters.
"Scouts, grab your magnifying glasses! Look at posters, books, or labels. When you find a 3-letter word, put your hands on your head!"

Video: The Sight Word Drill (10 min)
Play the First Sight Word Song. Before starting, give students three "zones" or cups on their desks labeled '2', '3', and '4'.
- Activity: As each word appears, students should hold up the number of fingers that match the letter count.
- Pause Point (1:48): Pause at "from". Discuss how some words don't sound like they look.
- Pause Point (2:38): Pause at "going". Highlight the "-ing" ending.

Main Activity: Word Sort (20 min)
Distribute the Word Sort Worksheet. Explain that Scouts can choose their "Trek Path":
The Length Trek
Group words by 2, 3, 4, or 5+ letters. Best for developing counting and 1-to-1 correspondence.
The Sound Safari
Group words by beginning letter (H, A, S, or other). Best for phonics reinforcement.
Scout Strategies & Differentiation
Scaffolding
For students struggling with counting, encourage them to touch each letter with their pencil. Provide a "cheat sheet" with numbers 1-5 and dots underneath.
Extension
Challenge early finishers to find a word with a silent letter (like 'know') or write a sentence using two words from their sort.
Key Vocabulary
Sight Word
Words we recognize instantly "by sight". They often don't follow standard phonics rules.
Categorize
To put things into groups that are the same in some way (like size or starting letter).
Closure: Pair Share (5 min)
"Knee-to-knee, eye-to-eye! Read your sorted words to a buddy."
"I have 3-letter words like had, him, and her."
"I have 'h' words: his, had, him, her, and how!"

Teacher Tip: Pausing the Video
The video moves quickly! Have your remote ready. Pause every 3-5 words to allow students time to process and hold up their fingers. This is a great time to do a quick "scout check" to see who is identifying the lengths correctly.
