Sensory Teacher Guide Multi-Sensory Facilitation Guide
Early Letter Name Acquisition & Association Series
Teacher Resource
Objective: Build automatic recognition and retrieval of letter names (S, A, T, P, I, N) and reinforce uppercase-to-lowercase shape matching through systematic visual, auditory, and fine-motor tracing tracks.
Station Management (Pacing: 15 Mins / Station)
Station 1: Clay & Trace
Place the laminated **Tactile Tracing Mats** with playdough. Students roll clay "worms" to form lowercase letters s, a, t, p, i, n, while pointing to the bold uppercase-lowercase pairings on the left and reciting their names.
Station 2: Roll & Trace
Provide the **Roll Say Trace Mat** game board with a die and game pawns. Students roll, move to letter tiles, read the letter name aloud, and trace the letter form inside the tile.
Station 3: Pin-Clips
Place the **Letter Matching Clip Cards** with a basket of spring clothespins. Students say the name of the big uppercase letter and clip its matching lowercase shape.
Guided Letter Naming Routine (Teacher Script)
Step 1: Letter Identification (Visual) Teacher points to a letter card (e.g., A). "This is the letter A . What is the name of this letter?" Students chant: "A!" Teacher: "Excellent. Let's point and say 'A'!"
Step 2: Uppercase-to-Lowercase Association "The big letter is uppercase A , and the small letter is lowercase a . They both share the same name: A ! Point to lowercase a and say its name: A!"
Step 3: Tactile Motor Path (Kinesthetic Memory) "Let's trace lowercase a in the air. Lift your pointer finger! 1. Circle around: 'A'. 2. Stem straight down: 'A'! Feel the shape and say its name out loud!"
Common Letter-Naming Obstacles
Confusing Similar Shapes: Keep a close watch on students matching lowercase p, d, and b. Have them physically air-write the strokes to emphasize starting nodes.
Letter Names vs. Word Cues: Encourage students to name the letters directly ("S", "A") rather than relying on phonetic word cues. Direct retrieval builds stronger rapid naming fluency (RAN).
Letter Pair Index
Uppercase Lowercase Tracing Verbal Cue S s Curve left, curve right. A a Around, up, and down. T t Tall stick down, cross the bar.
