Barnaby's Bouncing Boots
By Lenny Woods
Word Helpers:
badger: a furry woodland animal • soared: flew high in the air • heels: back part of boots
One sunny morning, Barnaby the badger went for a cheerful walk in Whispering Woods. Right beside the grand old oak tree, he spotted something bright and shiny. It was a pair of red boots with gold buckles. Barnaby sat down on a mossy log and wiggled his front paws inside.
Suddenly—BOING! The boots sprang straight into the air! Barnaby zoomed right over a tall wooden fence. Then he soared over Mrs. Fox's blackberry bushes. "Help!" Barnaby cried with a gasp. "These boots will not stop jumping!"
Up in a green apple tree, Pip the bluebird fluttered her wings. "Click your heels together twice, Barnaby!" she chirped loudly. Barnaby listened. He tapped his heels together—click, click! The boots stopped bouncing instantly, right at the edge of a muddy frog pond. Barnaby let out a gigantic sigh of relief.
Then Barnaby looked up into the branches. Crisp, juicy red apples were hanging way too high for little woodland animals to reach. Barnaby smiled from ear to ear. He gave one gentle hop, grabbed four sweet apples, and handed the first one to Pip. The bouncing boots were not scary anymore—they were the best surprise ever!
