Objective
Students will write an original stanza following an AABB rhyme scheme on the topic of recess, demonstrating an understanding of basic poetic structure.

Warm-up: Rhyme Time Circle
Gather students in a circle. The teacher starts with a simple word (e.g., "Cat"). Students pass a "Rhyme Baton" (a ball or eraser) around the circle. Each student must say a word that rhymes with the original word. If a student gets stuck, start a new circle with a fresh word.
Target words: Ball, Tree, Play, Sky.

Watch the "Wearing a Poet's Shoes" video segment from 6:24 to 6:53 .
Pause at 6:35 to discuss how the ending words are labeled with letters.
Ask: "Why do 'halls' and 'small' both get the letter A?"
Explain that AABB means the first two lines rhyme together, and the next two lines rhyme together.

Activity: Rhyme Builders
Hand out the "Rhyme Builders" worksheet. Students will write a single stanza about Recess following the AABB pattern.
Tip: Encourage students to brainstorm rhyming pairs before writing their full lines. (e.g., sun/fun, slide/hide, ball/tall).

Closure: Verse Valley Share
Invite volunteers to stand and read their stanzas. The class will listen and do a "thumbs up" if they hear the AABB rhyme pattern. Collect worksheets for assessment.

The AABB Standard
A successful stanza for this activity must meet three criteria:
Topic remains focused on Recess .
Follows the AABB pattern (Lines 1 & 2 rhyme; Lines 3 & 4 rhyme).
Contains 4 lines (one stanza).

Helpful Reminders
Near Rhyme: 4th graders may use "near rhymes" (e.g., sun/fun vs sun/home). Accept these as long as the student understands the concept.
Visual Rhyme: Some words look like they rhyme but don't (e.g., "have" and "gave"). Point these out if they appear!
Length: Stanzas don't have to be long. 4-10 words per line is plenty for 4th grade.
