Objective
Students will listen, identify, and produce rhyming words using auditory cues, -at, -en, and -op word family pictures, and rhythmic sentence completions.
Critical Pitfall
Struggling rhymers often match the starting sound (e.g., cat/can) instead of the ending sound. Emphasize "Listen to the END!" throughout.
Materials Needed
Rhyme Beat Anchor Chart, Guided Practice Worksheet, Exit Ticket, optional tambourine or clap-drum to tap out beats.

STEP 1: THE EAR TRAINING BEAT (Auditory Only)
Goal: Identify rhyming words strictly by listening, with NO letters or words shown.
🗣️ Teacher Script (Model):
"Listen closely, beat-makers! Today we're learning to rhyme. A rhyme is when words share the same ending beat. Put your hands on your ears. Say 'cat'... now say 'hat'. Do they sound the same at the end? Yes! They both end in /at/. Now listen to this: 'cat' and 'can'. They start the same, but 'cat' ends in /at/ and 'can' ends in /an/. Do they match at the end? No! They are Rhyme Busters!"
🏋️ Guided Practice Action:
Play "Thump or Silence." Say two words. If they rhyme, students thump their chest like a drum beat. If they don't, students sit perfectly still.
Pairs to test: (1) pen/ten [Thump], (2) mop/hop [Thump], (3) sun/sat [Silence - starting match error], (4) net/wet [Thump].

STEP 2: THE PICTURE CUE BEAT (Visual Word Families)
Goal: Connect the auditory matching sound to visual patterns (-at, -en, -op) using concrete images.
🗣️ Teacher Script (Model):
"Now let's look at our Rhyme Beat Chart. Look at this picture of a cat 🐱. It belongs to the -at family. Let's build its family! If I change the first sound of 'cat' to a /h/, I get... hat 🎩! Look, the letters at the end are exactly the same: a-t. They look identical, and they sound identical!"
📋 Picture Association Step:
Guide students to point to pictures on the Anchor Chart and sound them out syllable-by-syllable, emphasizing the common rime. Explain that a word family is a team of words that look and sound the same at the end.

STEP 3: THE LYRIC FLOW BEAT (Sentence Completion)
Goal: Complete sentences using strong contextual clues and word family constraints.
🗣️ Teacher Script (Model):
"Now let's use our word families to write some rhythms! I'll read a line, and you supply the missing beat. 'I put ten pennies inside my... pen!' Wait, does 'pen' make sense? No! What about 'ten pennies inside my... hen?' Funny, but no! What about... ten! Yes! Let's listen: 'ten' and 'ten' rhyme, but we need a different word. Let's try: 'I wrote a letter with a blue... pen!' Yes! Pen rhymes with ten!"
🤸 Student Scaffold:
Ensure students read the sentence aloud with you. Emphasize the rhythmic pause at the end of the sentence to allow them to "drop the beat" (saying the rhyming word). Use visual word cards if needed for support.

STEP 4: THE HIP-HOP RHYTHM BEAT (Lyric Analysis)
Goal: Identify and track real rhyme pairs inside a modern hip-hop inspired lyric block.
🎤 Rap Beat Modeling (Chant This Together):
"I saw a little cat, wearing a cool yellow hat.
He had a basketball, shooting hoops on the mat.
He saw a giant frog, and watched him hop and pop,
Until the music stopped, and they both had to stop!"
🎯 Tracking Rhymes:
Guide students to circle or underline rhyming couples in different colors on their worksheets. Have them clap on the rhyming words to build a physical connection to the rhythm.
Assessment (5 Min)
Distribute the **Exit Ticket**.
Success Criteria: Student correctly identifies the auditory rhyming match, writes the word family spelling pattern, and fills in the sentence frame correctly.
Support & Stretch
- Support: Use physical plastic letters to build the word family endings (-at) and swap out only the onset letter.
- Stretch: Have students create their own 2-line rap lyrics using a selected word family on the back.
