The Ghost Fleet of Mallows Bay
Lexile: 820L • Nonfiction
Along the wide waters of the Potomac River, just across from the northern Virginia shoreline, rests an eerie graveyard unlike any other: Mallows Bay. Submerged beneath the shallow water lie the wooden skeletons of nearly two hundred World War I steamships. Built rapidly between 1917 and 1918 to transport supplies to Europe, these massive vessels never entered battle. When the war abruptly concluded, the fleet was deemed obsolete, burned to the waterline, and abandoned in the marsh.
Over the past century, nature gradually reclaimed the rusted boilers and decaying wooden hulls. Sediment settled inside the cabins, creating fertile soil where shrubs, wild grasses, and river birches now thrive. The decaying ships were reborn as artificial reefs, sheltering over seventy species of fish. Today, osprey construct nests atop the masts. In 2019, Mallows Bay was officially designated a National Marine Sanctuary, proving how resilient nature can be when healing damaged environments.
Sanctuary Marker: Mallows Bay preserves the largest historical ship graveyard in the Western Hemisphere.

The Wild Stallion of Assateague
Fiction • Virginia Coast
The salty Atlantic breeze whipped cool sand against Maya’s calves as she crept low behind the sea-oat dunes. Dawn was just cracking over Assateague Island, painting the marshy horizon in brushstrokes of lavender and gold. Clutching her sketchbook tightly against her chest, Maya barely dared to breathe.
Through the morning mist, he appeared: a magnificent chestnut stallion known to locals as Storm Runner. Island folklore whispered that his ancestors were survivors of a Spanish shipwreck four centuries ago. His coat glistened like polished mahogany, and his wild mane tumbled down his neck like frothing white sea foam.
Suddenly, a snapped twig under Maya’s boot betrayed her position. Storm Runner’s head jerked upright. His nostrils flared wide, testing the damp ocean air. Maya froze, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Instead of bolting into the maritime forest, the stallion locked his gaze with hers for three electrifying seconds, snorted softly, and returned to grazing peacefully. Maya exhaled and gently opened her sketchbook.
- From which point of view is the story narrated? (SOL 5.5c)
A First person, because Maya shares personal thoughts using "I" and "me."
B Third person limited, focusing closely on Maya's actions and feelings.

- What conflict arises when the twig snaps under Maya's boot? (SOL 5.5b)
A Maya risks scaring away the stallion she hoped to sketch.
B Maya realizes she forgot her sketching pencils back at camp.
C A park ranger approaches and orders Maya off the dunes.
D Storm Runner charges directly toward Maya and the shoreline.

Correct Answer: B
The article traces how obsolete, abandoned wooden ships transformed into a thriving wildlife habitat and national sanctuary.
Question 2: Context Clues SOL 5.4a • 2 pts
