The Inference Formula
An inference is not a wild guess—it is an evidence-backed deduction.
Element A
Text Evidence
Words, dialogue, character actions, tone, and physical details directly on the page.
Element B
Schema / World Knowledge
What you already know about human behavior, relationships, and cause-and-effect.
Result: Valid Inference
"Reading what the author intentionally left unsaid."
Skill Focus 1
02 / Vocabulary Clues
Unlocking Unfamiliar Words
When authors use complex diction, hunt for 3 specific anchor clues:
Contrast
Look for pivot words like however, unlike, or instead revealing the opposite.
Cause & Effect
Observe the consequence of the word: What happened right before or immediately after?
Tone & Atmosphere
Does the scene feel tense, formal, deceptive, or relieved? Word flavor matches the room.
Quick Test:
"Rather than being taciturn like his brother, Marcus spoke nonstop to anyone who walked by."
Inference: Taciturn means quiet or reserved (signaled by contrast with "spoke nonstop").
Skill Focus 2
03 / Internal States
Inferring Character Perspectives
People rarely announce their true feelings. We read the physical evidence.
Somatic / Physical Cues
- • Jaw clenching, gaze avoidance, or rapid fidgeting
- • Sudden stillness or crossed arms indicating defense
- • Shifts in breathing or vocal cadence
Discrepancy (Speech vs. Action)
- • Saying "I'm fine" while slamming the locker door
- • Offering congratulations with an unsmiling, rigid posture
- • Rule of thumb: Actions reveal true motivation
Guiding Question: What is this character trying to protect, hide, or achieve right now?
Skill Focus 3
04 / Dialogue & Subtext
Social Subtext: The Iceberg
In high school and in literature, spoken words are only the surface layer.
Above Water (10%)
The Literal Words
"Nice shoes, Jordan."
Plain dictionary meaning
Below Water (90% Subtext)
Social Drivers & Nuance
Social Hierarchy: Testing status or teasing
Saving Face: Masking insecurity or envy
Passive Aggression: Voicing irritation politely
Solidarity: Inviting someone into an inside joke
Key takeaway: Tone + Context + Relationship = True Meaning Look at who is watching.
Live Investigation
05 / Practice Trial
Quick Case: The Lab Table
Read the scene below and decode all three levels together:
"When Mr. Vance announced lab partners, Maya didn't look up from her binder. Her fingers methodically tapped her pen against the metal spiral. Across the room, Devon caught her eye, smiled, and gestured to the empty stool beside him. Maya instantly adjusted her glasses, turned her chair ninety degrees toward the whiteboard, and exhaled slowly."
1. Context Clue
What does methodically imply about her pen tapping? (Controlled, deliberate rhythm).
2. Perspective
How does Maya feel about partnering with Devon? (Uncomfortable, avoiding, guarded).
3. Social Subtext
Turning 90 degrees away sends an unspoken boundary without causing a public scene.

Evidence Passage: The Sound Booth Incident
Media Lab • Period 5
The red "RECORDING" light hovered above the glass, but inside the recording booth, nothing was moving. Jordan sat hunched over the soundboard, his fingers poised rigidly above the audio faders. It was twelve minutes past the final bell. The submission portal for the State Media Showcase would automatically lock at 4:00 PM, and Jordan had already refreshed the upload queue four times.
The heavy soundproof door cracked open. Casey slipped in, juggling a sweating iced tea cup and an unzipped backpack. "Traffic on Elm Street was completely gridlocked," Casey muttered, offering a hurried, lopsided grin before dropping into the swivel chair.
Jordan did not return the smile. Without turning his head, he delivered a brusque response: "Headphones. Track three. Now." When Casey offered an equivocal shrug and began casually untangling the headphone cord with one hand, Jordan’s jaw twitched. Jordan meticulously aligned the microphone boom arm, his knuckles turning pale against the matte black metal, before clicking the mouse with aggressive precision.
