Vowel Teams AI & AY: Teacher Guide
Daily Schedule: 40 Mins / Day • Scripted Prompts & Error Correction
40 Mins / Day
Tier 1 & Tier 2 Intervention
Orthographic Spelling Rule:
Both ai and ay represent long /ā/. Use ai in the beginning or middle of a base syllable (e.g., rain, trail). Use ay at the end of a base word or syllable because English words rarely end in i (e.g., day, play).

Part 2: Auditory Drill • [03:00–07:00 • 4 Mins] Hear → Write
Teacher dictates: "/ā/". Students echo & trace on sand/boards: "a-e, a-i in middle, a-y at end = /ā/".
Part 3: Blending Board Drill • [07:00–12:00 • 5 Mins] Blend → Read
Pocket chart chains: b-ai-t → w-ai-t → tr-ai-n → dr-ai-n | d-ay → st-ay → cl-ay → spr-ay.
Drill Errors & Immediate Teacher Prompts
Error: Short /ă/ on Visual Card
Prompt: "Look closely: two vowels are walking together. Who talks? The first vowel! Say: ai, rain, /ā/."
Error: Writes single 'a' for /ā/
Prompt: "Single 'a' in a closed syllable says /ă/. To make /ā/, it needs a vowel partner! Write ai and ay."
Error: Segmented /b/-/a/-/t/ (no blend)
Prompt: "Don't pause between sounds! Sing it like a song: sweep your finger and stretch: baaaait → bait."

Day 1 & Day 2 Errors & Scripted Prompts
Total: 40 Mins / Day
Day 1: Team ‘AI’ (Middle Position) • 40 Mins Total [00:00–12:00 Drill | 12:00–22:00 Map | 22:00–30:00 Read | 30:00–40:00 Dictate]
Error 1: Writes *ran* for *rain* (Short Vowel)
Scripted Prompt: “Tap the sounds: /r/ /ā/ /n/. What vowel sound is in the middle? Is it short /ă/ like apple, or long /ā/ like rain? (Long /ā/). What vowel team spells /ā/ in the middle? Write ai.”
Error 2: Writes *rane* for *rain* (Silent-E Overuse)
Scripted Prompt: “You heard long /ā/! But this word does not use sneaky e. It uses two vowels walking together. What team works in the middle? (ai). Erase the 'e' and put 'ai' in the middle.”
Dictate Sounds: /ā/ (ai), /ch/, /sh/
Dictate Words: wait, trail, snail, faint
Sentence: "The snail will wait on the wet trail."
Day 1 Teacher Notes (Specific errors observed & prompts delivered):

Error 1: Writes *plai* for *play* (Illegal Final 'i')
Scripted Prompt: “Where is the /ā/ sound in play? (At the very end). Can base words in English end in letter 'i'? (No!). What letter partners with 'a' at the end of words? (y). Change 'i' to 'y' to make ay.”
Error 2: Writes *rayn* for *rain* (Medial AY)
Scripted Prompt: “Listen to rain: /r/ /ā/ /n/. Is /ā/ at the end, or is there a consonant sound after it? (Consonant /n/ is at the end). Since /ā/ is in the middle, we must use ai!”
Dictate Sounds: /ā/ (ay), /ō/ (oa), /ē/ (ee)
Dictate Words: clay, tray, spray, sway
Sentence: "We can play with the gray clay today."
Day 2 Teacher Notes (Position rule mastery check):

Error: Reading *clay* as /klă-ē/ in story
Scripted Prompt: “Look at the ending: what team is that? (ay). What does 'ay' say? (/ā/). Do not pronounce 'y' separately. Blend smoothly: /k/ /l/ /ā/ → clay.”

Error: Miscue on Pseudo-word *slai* or *dray*

Error: Miscue on Multisyllabic *stainproof*
Diagnostic Probe: “Cover the second syllable. Read syllable 1: (stain). Now cover syllable 1 and read syllable 2: (proof). Put them together: (stainproof). Code as: Multisyllabic Integration Issue.”

Chapter Text: Decodable Reading Passage Target Vowels: ai • ay
Ray and Gail woke up on a damp, foggy day. A cold rain began to fall on the train tracks near Green Bay. “We cannot play on the playground today,” groaned Ray with a sigh. “The trail is muddy, and we must stay inside.”
Gail ran to the window. “Look down at the harbor!” she yelled. “Dad is painting his gray sailboat. He has a tray of fresh blue paint! Let us put on our warm raincoats and help him before the big storm.”
Ray smiled. They did not delay. Ray carried the heavy paint pail down the path, and Gail held the wooden rudder. When the sun broke through the gray mist, Dad let them sail across the calm blue bay. It was the best day of May!
Coding Task: Highlight or underline ai words in blue and ay words in yellow!
Text-Dependent Comprehension Questions
1. Why couldn’t Ray and Gail play on the trail at first? (Write in a complete sentence.)
2. What was Dad doing down at the harbor? What did he have on his tray?
