Mission #104: Inferencing
Riddle Detectives
How to Crack Mysteries Using Clues & Word Banks
Target: Solve riddles using clues + what you know
Tool: Detective Word Bank

An Inference
A smart conclusion that cracks the mystery wide open!
Remember: Riddles never say the answer directly. You have to connect the pieces yourself!
Strategy
3 Rules for Solving Riddles
1
Hunt Keywords
Circle action words, descriptions, shapes, sounds, and what the object does.
2
Scan Word Bank
Look at every option. Ask: "Does this fit ALL the clues, or just one?"
3
Prove Your Case
Cross off ruled-out words and state your evidence: "I know because..."
A good detective never guesses without evidence!
Guided Case #1
Let's Crack One Together
Watch the Clues
CASE FILE #1
“I have no feet, but I fall from the sky.
I tap on windows and make puddles high.
Open an umbrella to stay warm and dry.
What am I?”
Word Bank Options:
Snowman
Rain
Kite
Why it's Rain:
It falls from clouds, makes puddles, and we need umbrellas to stay dry. All 3 clues match!
Inferencing is easy when you test every clue against your choices!
Guided Case #2
Turn & Talk with a Partner
Detective Partner Challenge
CASE FILE #2
“I sleep all day upside down in a dark cave.
At night I fly quietly, hungry and brave.
I have wings but no feathers, and use sound to find my way.
What am I?”
Suspect Word Bank:
Owl
Bat
Airplane
Partner Discussion Prompts:
1. Which word fits "sleep upside down"?
2. Why can't it be an owl? (Hint: check feathers!)
Discuss with your partner for 60 seconds. What is your final verdict?

Teacher Think-Aloud Model (During Slide 4 Guided Practice)
Say: “Detectives, listen to this clue: ‘I have no feet, but I fall from the sky.’ Could it be a bird? A bird falls sometimes, but a bird has feet! So cross off bird.”
Say: “Next line: ‘I tap on windows and make puddles high.’ Now I use what I know in my brain: what falls from sky clouds, hits glass windows, and creates puddles on sidewalks? Water! Rain!”
Reinforce: “Notice how I didn't guess on the first line alone. I combined two text clues with my own memories to make one strong inference.”
Anticipated Pitfalls & Diagnostic Fixes
Pitfall 1: Fixating on 1 Word
Students see "hands" in Case #2 and guess "human body" or "gloves" without reading about the clock face.
Fix: Require circling two distinct colors of clues before writing.
Pitfall 2: Ignoring Word Bank
Students invent answers like "campfire" on page 1 where the word bank specifically contains "clock".
Fix: Have students point their finger at the word bank before writing.
