The Case of the Missing Whistle
by Lenny's Learning Studio
[1] Maya’s heart hammered as she paced the lobby of the community center. Today was the Whispering Pines Talent Fair, and she was scheduled to perform an agility routine with her basset hound, Barnaby.
[2] "Where on earth is my silver training whistle?" Maya whispered, digging frantically through her tote. "Without it, Barnaby will only hear the loud cheer of the crowd instead of my commands!" Barnaby rested his heavy chin on the cool tile, giving one quiet thump of his tail.
[3] "Don't fret, Maya, this problem will be easy to solve," said her brother Leo. "First, let's trace your steps. Did you drop it near the grooming station?" He pointed toward the outdoor courtyard, where giant oak trees shed their thick, rough bark onto the damp grass.
[4] As they stepped outside, Maya’s gloomy frown slowly transformed into a hopeful smile. Barnaby sprang up, his keen nose twitching in the breeze. He caught a familiar scent on the wind and trotted directly toward the judges' oak bench.
[5] "Look under the bench!" Leo called out. Resting right beside a wooden crate was the shiny whistle. Barnaby stood proud and let out a joyful bark that made the judges chuckle.
[6] "You cracked the case!" Maya cheered. Her anxious worries vanished completely, replaced by pure confidence. The pair was finally ready to take the stage.
