Instructional Steps
1
The "Was" Funny Sentence (5 min)
Open the Sentence Spark Slides. Start the video and pause at 3:52 on the word "was". Ask students to shout out the silliest sentence they can think of using that word. (Example: "The cow was dancing on the moon!")
2
Predict the Sentence (10 min)
Play the Primer Sentences section (21:58-25:05). Pause the video after the narrator says the target word but before the sentence appears on screen. Have students guess what the sentence might be.
"The word is 'She'. What do you think she is doing? Let's see... She is happy!"
3
Sentence Scramble (20 min)
Divide students into small groups. Give each group an envelope containing the Mix and Match Cards (already cut up).
- Groups must work together to arrange the words to form a correct sentence.
- Once they think they have it, they raise their hands.
- Hand them the corresponding Sentence Check Strip to verify their work.
- If correct, they can scramble it back up and swap envelopes with another group!
4
Reflection (5 min)
"Who can share one of the sentences their group built?"
Pick one student to act out their sentence while the class reads it aloud together from the screen or their strip.
