Activity Overview

This activity is designed to challenge students' understanding of logical flow and cohesion within a single paragraph. By unscrambling a text and intentionally inserting transition words, students practice synthesizing information rather than just listing facts.

Timing

20–30 minutes (10 mins for sequencing, 15-20 mins for drafting and peer review).

Structural Logic

Problem → Claim → Evidence → Counter → Rebuttal

F: Establishes the hook/context (fossil fuel pollution).

B: States the main claim (renewable energy is vital).

D: Introduces the specific example/solution (solar energy).

E: Presents the opposing viewpoint (cost concerns).

A & C: Provide the evidence that refutes the counter-argument (efficiency and accessibility).

Exemplar Paragraph: Step 2

Fossil fuels currently provide most of the world's power but cause significant pollution. Therefore, transitioning to renewable energy sources is vital for the long-term health of our planet. Solar energy offers a clean alternative by harnessing the natural power of the sun. However, critics sometimes argue that solar technology is too expensive for widespread adoption. Conversely, technology has improved, making solar panels much more efficient than they were in the past. Furthermore, prices for solar equipment have plummeted, making clean energy more accessible to the average person.

Note: Students may use different transitions (e.g., "In addition" instead of "Furthermore"). The goal is correct category usage.

Facilitation Tips

The "Skeleton" Phase

Encourage students to read the sentences out loud to hear the "clunkiness" of the wrong order. Have them look for keywords like "Critics" vs "Alternative" to find the conflict.

Transition Match-Up

Remind students that a transition like "However" must connect two opposing ideas. Using it between Sentence B and D, for instance, would break the logic because both are positive.

Check for Punctuation

7th graders often forget the comma after a transition word (e.g., "Therefore, solar..."). Use this as a quick editing mini-lesson during the drafting phase.
