Mental Cartographers
Navigating Perspective & Emotion Through Creative Metaphor
Grade: 4 Duration: 60 Mins
ELA Standards
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.4.1 (Refer to details), RL.4.4 (Determine meaning of figurative language).
SEL Framework
Self-Awareness: Identifying and labeling emotional regions. Self-Regulation: Reframing challenges as terrains.
Materials Needed
Mentor Text, Mind Map Worksheet, Colored Pencils, Reflection Journals, Compass Slide.
Mentor Text: "The Landscape of Me"
"My mind is an uncharted continent, full of secrets waiting to be discovered. Along the coast lies the Harbor of Memories, where experiences float like old, friendly ships. Some days, quiet waves lap at the shore; on others, stormy memories rock the vessels, but the sturdy anchors of my values keep them safe."
"In the center rises the Peak of Passions. Here, a brilliant volcano burns like a campfire that never goes out, fueled by my love for soccer, drawing, and playing the piano. This warmth heats my entire map, sending sparks of joy down to the valleys."
"High above, the Forest of Dreams whispers in the wind. These tall pines reach for the sky, their branches cradling my biggest wishes. In this quiet grove, my future dances lightly on the breeze, reminding me that the paths I walk today are paving the way to tomorrow."
1 Part 1: Hook & Mentor Text Discovery (20 Mins)
The Hook & Perspective Prompt
Ask: "If you could look inside your head, would you see a clean, organized filing cabinet, or a wild, untamed island with different weather patterns?" Introduce the word Perspective—how we view the world based on our thoughts, passions, and history. Explain that we are all cartographers mapping our unique mental landscapes.
Reading & Analyzing
Read the mentor text aloud. Guide students to search for and annotate figurative language:
- Metaphor: "My mind is an uncharted continent."
- Simile: "Experiences float like old ships."
- Personification: "Future dances lightly."
Discussion Framework: Ask: "Why does the author use a volcano to represent passions? How does a stormy memory behave like an unsettled sea? How does this figurative language make an abstract feeling feel like a physical place we can understand?"

2 Part 2: Mapping Their Landscapes (25 Mins)
Distribute the Mental Cartographers Worksheet. Explain that students are mapping their own unique inner landscape. Modeling with your own examples is highly recommended to build trust.
Instructional Modeling:
Draw a quick island on the board. Say: "My Peak of Passion is cooking, so I'll draw a chef's hat blowing off in a storm. My Sea of Memories contains my childhood dog; I'll draw a pawprint island."
Student Guidelines:
- Identify 3 core regions (Passions, Memories, Dreams).
- Give them metaphorical names using figurative language.
- Add tiny drawings or symbols representing themselves.
3 Part 3: The Explorer's Log Reflection (15 Mins)
Students transition to the Mental Cartographers Journal. They write a descriptive paragraph from the perspective of an explorer visiting one specific region of their mind map.
Writing Criteria: Must include at least one metaphor or simile describing how their mind handles challenges in that region (e.g., "When I get frustrated during soccer, the volcano on my Passion Peak erupts, but deep breaths acting as cool breezes quiet the lava.").
SEL Connection & Self-Regulation Benefits
By naming and visualizing emotional areas as geographical features (e.g., "The Swamp of Frustration," "The Breezy Plains of Calm"), students create **cognitive distance** between themselves and their big emotions. This encourages self-regulation, as they can "travel" from a turbulent region to a peaceful one using deep breathing, visualization, and positive self-talk.
Differentiation Strategies
Support (ELL / Struggling Writers):
Provide sentence starters: "My mind is like a ________ because..." or "In my Harbor of Memories, I see a ship called ________." Allow them to label the worksheet using simple words or drawings rather than full metaphors.
Extension (Advanced Writers):
Challenge students to create a coordinate grid on their map and draft an "Explorer's Legend" with detailed cardinal directions, describing how a traveler navigates from their memories to their dreams.

What is Perspective?
Your perspective is the unique lens through which you see, understand, and experience the world.
Just like a real map has different landscapes, your mind is a territory shaped by your Passions, Memories, and Dreams.
Passions What fuels you
Memories Where you've been
Dreams Where you're going
Every single cartographer has a completely unique mind-map!
Literary Discovery Slide 3
Mentor Text Treasure Hunt
Let's look at how the author used figurative language in "The Landscape of Me."
M Metaphors
"My mind is an uncharted continent..."
Analogy: Compares the mind directly to a physical world.
S Similes
"Experiences float like old, friendly ships..."
Comparison: Uses "like" to show how memories move.
P Personification
"My future dances lightly on the breeze..."
Human traits: Gives the future human movements.
Figurative language helps make internal feelings visible and physical.
Your Expedition Slide 4
Time to Draw Your Map!
Take your Mental Cartographers Worksheet. You will map out three territories of your own inner land:
- ✔ Peak of Passions: Fueled by your favorite activities or things you love.
- ✔ Harbor of Memories: Holding experiences or people that are dear to you.
- ✔ Forest of Dreams: Reaching up towards your future hopes and wishes.
Cartographer's Checklist
Label your islands with figurative language titles.
Use colors that reflect the emotions of each place.
Draw symbols like sails, mountain trails, or stars.
Make sure your work areas are clean so your beautiful art stands out!
