1 Plot Beat 1: The Garza Sisters on Their Own
Part One
The story begins during a scorching summer in Eagle Pass, Texas. The five Garza sisters have been living without rules since their father, Papá, abandoned the family almost a year ago.
Their mother, Mamá, works long, exhausting shifts at the local diner to pay bills. Because Mamá is away from dawn until night, the sisters are left unsupervised. The house has grown messy and overgrown, and the girls run wild like a pack of wolves.
To escape the blistering heat, the girls sneak off past a barbed-wire fence to a hidden, forbidden swimming hole on the banks of the Rio Grande. As thousands of yellow and black butterflies flutter around them, Odilia feels a quiet dread that their wild freedom cannot last forever.

2 Plot Beat 2: The Grim Discovery in the Reeds
Part Two
While splashing in the river, youngest sister Pita suddenly screams in terror. Tangled in the muddy reeds beneath the water is the lifeless body of a drowned man.
Odilia immediately wants to call the police and tell their mother. However, her younger sisters strongly disagree. Juanita inspects the man’s heavy leather wallet and discovers his name: Gabriel Perdido. The wallet contains hundreds of dollars, family photos, and a Mexican address in El Sacrificio.
Juanita and the twins propose a radical, daring plan: instead of turning the body over to border patrol or the police, they should use Papá’s old broken-down Chevy car to secretly drive the body across the border into Mexico and deliver him home to his grieving family. Odilia protests, but her sisters insist that returning the man is an act of pure kindness. This life-altering decision sets off their epic journey.

Author Guadalupe Garcia McCall reimagines Homer’s ancient Greek epic, The Odyssey, through Mexican folklore and Mexican-American culture. Primera Parte
