The Formula
Compares two items using the connector words LIKE or AS.

The Formula

This guide supports the delivery of the Literal Detective unit. Designed specifically for students with intellectual disabilities, autism, or learning differences who require visual anchors, predictable structures, and concrete examples to decode figurative language.
Suggested Lesson Flow (45-60 Mins)
10 Mins: Introduction: Review "Literal" (real/fact) vs. "Figurative" (clues/feelings). Distribute the Decoder Graphic Organizer and practice making silly faces for the "Literal" column examples (e.g. actually holding an explosive grenade).
15 Mins: Guided Practice: Walk through Pop Music Meanings Worksheet together. Read lyrics aloud. Play the song snippets on a classroom audio system if possible. Discuss whether the action is physically possible (e.g., catching a grenade).
20 Mins: Independent/Partner Matching: Have students complete the Daily Chat Matchups Worksheet in pairs. Instruct them to use the Decoder Graphic Organizer as a reference manual to assist with symbol cues.
10 Mins: Debrief: Exit Ticket round. Go around the room and ask each student to make up an onomatopoeia sound word for a common classroom activity (closing a book, clicking a pen).
Scaffolded Prompting Hierarchy
If a student struggles with a figurative translation, support them using the Least-to-Most method:
1. Visual/Symbol Cue Point to the symbols on the Decoder . "Look at the symbol of the feet. What idiom is this?"
2. Literal Contrast "Can your feet literally turn cold like ice cubes? No, so what is this really showing us?"
3. Binary Choice "Does 'cold feet' mean you are freezing, or does it mean you are scared to do something?"
