Letter V Adventure Teacher Guide
Ages 3–5 (Pre-K / Kinder)
Focus: Sound /v/
Target Sound Voiced /v/ (lip-buzz)
Lesson Length 30–40 min (or 3 centers)
Key Vocabulary Van, Volcano, Violin, Vase
Physical Gesture Two fingers in a "V" vibrating
Sound Articulation Hook: "The Little Van Motor"
How to teach the mouth shape: Instruct students to gently rest their top teeth on their bottom lip ("bunny teeth on lip"). Turn on their vocal motor and blow air: /v-v-v-v/. Have children place their fingers on their throat to feel the buzz! Contrast with /f/ (whisper quiet motor off) and /b/ (lips popped together).
Kinesthetic Songs & Action Rhymes
1 Victor's Very Speedy Van
Tune: The Wheels on the Bus
The little van goes vroom, vroom, vroom,
Vroom, vroom, vroom, all through town!
The little van goes vroom, vroom, vroom,
V is for the van!
Preschool Actions: Hold an imaginary steering wheel, steer side to side, and buzz lips on "vroom"!
2 The Bubbling Volcano Chant
Action Chant • Call & Response
Down in the valley, deep and low,
A huge volcano starts to glow!
/v/ - /v/ - /v/ it bubbles bright,
POP! Red lava shoots in sight!
Preschool Actions: Crouch down low on floor, whisper /v/ faster, then leap up high in the air with arms spread in a V-shape on "POP!"
3 The Playful Little Violin
Tune: Twinkle, Twinkle
Vv is for the violin,
Tucked right under your soft chin.
Draw your bow across the strings,
Hear the pretty song it sings!
Preschool Actions: Rest left arm near chin, glide right hand back and forth like a bow, singing in high playful voices.
Air-Writing Chant (Big Body Formation)
"Slant down into the valley deep, slant back up to the mountain peak! Sharp point at the bottom!"

Instructional Blueprint
Step-by-Step Lesson & Activity Centers
Part 2: Execution
Daily 4-Step Lesson Sequence (35 Minutes)
1. Sound Mystery Box 7 min
Hide a toy van, small plastic vase, and pretend violin in a bag. Pull one out at a time, exaggerate the starting buzz /v-v-van/, and guide students to identify the mystery sound.
2. Songs & Whole-Body V 8 min
Sing "Victor's Speedy Van" with steering wheels. Practice air-tracing the sharp valley point with ribbons or pointers. Children make a "V" with two fingers and buzz like bees.
3. Picture Card Sorting Hunt 10 min
Distribute the Letter V Picture Cards. Children take turns holding up their card, making the sound, and placing it either inside "Victor's Van" (V-sound) or the stop basket (non-V sound).
4. Activity Sheet & Small Groups 10 min
Students complete the rainbow-trace on the Activity Sheet. Circulate to check pencil grip and ensure students make a pointed bottom, not a rounded U curve.
Hands-On Learning Centers
Playdough Vines
Roll green playdough snakes into diagonal lines. Connect them to form uppercase V and lowercase v vines on laminated mats!
Vibrant Flower Vase
Set out a clear plastic vase and faux flowers. Children say a /v/ word (e.g. "van", "volcano") before dropping a flower into the vase.
Baking Soda Volcano
Mini-science spark: Drip red vinegar into baking soda cups while chanting "/v-v-volcano!" Watch preschool eyes light up as it fizzes!
Common Preschool Misconceptions & Quick Fixes
Confusion 1: Saying /b/ instead of /v/
Many 3-year-olds swap /v/ for /b/ ("ban" instead of "van"). Show them in a handheld mirror: top teeth must bite bottom lip, no popping two lips together!
Confusion 2: Writing U instead of V
Young writers often round the bottom. Emphasize: "V has a sharp pointy chin like an ice cream cone point, while U has a smile bowl!"
Home Connection Backpack Note
Encourage families to do the "Vegetable Taste Test" at dinner and look for moving vans on car rides, making the /v/ motor buzz together!
