SKIM & SCAN
Before you read the whole story, scan the titles, pictures, and headings .
"What is this story mostly about? What kind of clues do I see?"

PRE-GAME
Read the questions first! This tells your brain exactly what clues to look for while you read.
Strategy: Clue Hunting

Don't guess! The answer is usually hiding right inside the story. Be a detective and find the exact sentence that proves your answer.

Mission Objective
This lesson is designed to transform standardized testing from a source of anxiety into a manageable "mission." Teachers will guide students through specific reading comprehension tactics and emotional regulation strategies to maximize success on the IREAD assessment.

SLIDES 1-2:
Setting the Stage
Introduce the assessment as a "Mission." This reframing helps lower the stakes emotionally while maintaining high focus.
Teacher Script: "Good morning, Detectives. Today, we aren't just taking a test; we are embarking on a special mission called IREAD. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to use your expert reading skills to uncover the truth in every story we read."
SLIDE 3:
Taming the Butterflies
Model the "3-3-3" breathing technique. Have students physically practice the "Power Posture" (sitting tall, hands on lap or desk). Discuss how physical state affects mental performance.
Acknowledge that feeling nervous is normal—it's just "energy" waiting to be used.
Normalize mistakes during practice so they feel safe to try during the test.

Tactical Reading Strategies
1. Reading Questions First
"This isn't cheating—it's intelligence gathering! It gives your brain a 'wanted poster' for the information you need."
2. Text Evidence
Emphasize that the test is open-book in essence. The answers are there. Encourage students to literally point to the sentence in the text before selecting an answer.
3. Slash and Burn
Teach them to "eliminate the impossible." If an answer makes them say "Wait, what?", it's likely a distractor. Crossing it out reduces the cognitive load.
Classroom Mission Environment
Auditory Cues
Play low-fi "spy" or "mission" instrumental music during practice rounds to reinforce the theme without being distracting.
Visual Reinforcement
Keep the Mission IREAD Field Guide on students' desks during preparation weeks so the icons become familiar "safety" signals.
