Model (Direct Teach): "To find the theme, authors leave clues. Today, we're tracking two specific clues: First, Tough Questions , when a character faces a hard decision inside. Second, Aha Moments , when the character suddenly realizes a truth. These clues point us directly to the lesson!"
Guide (Active Reading): "Let's look at Leo in our story. When he finds the sea glass, he has a big choice. Let's look for his Tough Question . Highlight the moment he stops to ask himself what really matters. Then watch for his Aha Moment when he looks at Maya."

Leo walked along the shoreline, his eyes searching the wet sand. His sister Maya was sitting on a nearby dune, quietly crying because her favorite shell necklace had washed into the tide. Suddenly, a bright flash of sapphire caught Leo's eye. Half-buried in the tide pool lay the Blue Whisper —the rarest piece of sea glass on the coast. He had searched for it for three long years. He picked it up; it was smooth, perfect, and glowing like cold starlight. Leo slipped it into his pocket. His heart beat fast. But then he looked over at Maya, whose tears were still falling. A voice whispered inside his head: Is a shiny stone really worth more than Maya's happy smile?
He pulled the glass from his pocket, the deep sapphire color catching the morning sun. Suddenly, Leo understood. The sea glass was beautiful, but it was just a cold piece of glass. Maya's laughter was warm and alive. Leo ran over and placed the Blue Whisper into Maya's small hands. As her face lit up with an enormous smile, Leo felt a wave of warmth spread through him. He didn't need the stone; her happiness was the real treasure.

"We must dive underneath the actions to find the real treasure!"
Clue 1: Tough Questions

"What does this question make me wonder about the character or life?"
When to spot it:
The character faces a really hard internal choice and stops to ask themselves a difficult question.
What it reveals:
It shows us their internal struggle. This struggle points directly to what matters most in life.

"How might this realization change things?"
When to spot it:
A character suddenly understands something or gets a new idea that changes their actions.
What it reveals:
If the character learns a lesson, that is probably the theme of the entire story!
Look for that sudden flash of realization!
