LESSON PHASE & PACING CORE ACTIVITIES & TEACHER STEPS (I DO, WE DO, YOU DO) SCAFFOLDS & CFU
1. DO NOW & HOOK 5 mins
Activate Family & Color Schema:
Show a visual family portrait on slide/poster. Ask students: "Who do you see?" and "What colors are they wearing?" Introduce own family photos as realia. Have students draw a quick scribble of their family and share one word with a partner.
Scaffold: Realia/Photos. CFU (Turn & Talk):
"This is my [__]. She is [__]." K-1 uses basic labels; 2-4 uses simple adjective frames.
2. MODEL ("I DO") 10 mins
A. Phonics Review & Sort (Word Hunt):
Model pointing and reading long vowels from Unit 1.2 #1 Sound Chart. Show how silent 'e' or double vowels change sounds (e.g. bak -> bake, tre -> tree). Model sorting "nine" and "tree" into the Unit 1.2 #2 Word Sort.
B. Model Reading & Annotation:
Read passage "My Family" (Unit 1.2 #3) with theatrical hand motions. Highlight words to decode. Show how to circle unknown words (e.g. "beautiful", "different") and draw a tiny visual next to them (e.g., flower for beautiful).
Scaffold: Color-coded charts, exaggeration of phonics sounds, hand gestures. CFU (Choral Repeat):
Students repeat phonics chants. Show thumbs up if word has a long "i" sound.
3. PRACTICE ("WE/YOU") 20 mins
A. Ear-to-Ear Reading & Phonics Hunt (We Do):
In pairs (K-1 paired with 2-4 where possible), students read the passage to each other. Partner checks for fluid reading. Students hunt for 3 long-vowel words and write them in their word sort grid.
B. Individual / Small Group Challenges (You Do):
Teacher rotates for 1-on-1 reading challenges. Students work on tasks: 1. Complete Unit 1.2 #2 Word Sort, 2. Complete comprehension check (What color is dad's boat?), 3. Draw their family. K-1 gets oral challenges; 2-4 receives speed decoding challenge (>40 wpm).
Scaffold: Peer pairing, structured task checklists on board, teacher small-group pull-out. CFU (Checklist):
Stamp page for students who pass phonics reading or wpm target.
4. CLOSURE & CFU 5 mins
Family Fact Exit Ticket:
Students verbally or on paper complete the prompt: "The author's dad is [___] and has an [___] boat." K-1 points to colors/images; 2-4 writes complete words (tall, orange) using text evidence.
Scaffold: Written sentence starter on the board: "My dad is _____." CFU:
Collect Exit Ticket cards for planning tomorrow's writing pairings.
Teacher Reflection Plan
Did K-1 students successfully map the oral family words to the printed English words using the visual pictures? Did 2-4 graders hit the 40+ words-per-minute goal?
Reteach & Support
Provide flashcards with "silent e" markings for students struggling with long vowel sorts. Pull K-1 students during Do Now tomorrow to reinforce 'mother/father' vocabulary.
Events & Reminders
Remind students to bring one family drawing, photo, or heirloom tomorrow for the "Roving Paragraphs" presentation day.

There are eight people in my family, and everyone is different. My dad is tall. His favorite color is green. He has an orange boat. My mom is beautiful. She has a cute nose. She loves flowers.
My baby sister is one year old. She gets dirty a lot, and my mom and dad try to keep her clean. I am seven years old. I have a pet bird. It is blue. It likes to play in water and get wet. Even though everyone in my family is different, we all love each other a lot.
