The Tale of Fuzz and Mel

The bedroom was dark and quiet, but Josh and Jen tossed and turned under their thick blankets. "Gran!" Josh called into the hallway. Gran peeked through the doorway and asked, "What is keeping you awake?" Josh sighed, "We simply cannot drift off to sleep." Jen sat up and pleaded, "Please tell us an exciting bedtime story!" Gran settled into an armchair and agreed, "Very well, I will share the classic tale of two cats named Fuzz and Mel."

Fuzz was a cautious, sweet-tempered cat who took extra care to stay completely safe at all times. In contrast, his friend Mel was a daring, reckless flyer who piloted a speedy red airplane. One morning, Mel invited his friend, "Fuzz, climb aboard and take an exciting flight in my airplane!" Fuzz hesitated nervously and stammered, "Well... the truth is... I prefer to remain safe on solid ground." But Mel insisted, "It is entirely safe! Jump into the cockpit!"

The airplane soared higher and higher into the bright blue sky. A graceful wild duck flew directly alongside the cockpit window. Fuzz gasped in delight, "What a marvelous duck! And what an incredible flight! Why was I ever nervous about flying in the sky?"

Suddenly, Mel jerked the steering controls, sending the biplane zipping abruptly from side to side! Fuzz gasped as his stomach dropped. Next, Mel aimed the nose directly toward the grassy meadows and pushed into a steep dive. "ZZZZZZZZZZ!" screeched the roaring engine.

Fuzz gripped the edge of the cockpit with his claws, terrified for his life. "Halt!" Fuzz shrieked in panic. "This is dangerous! Not safe at all!" Mel finally leveled out the aircraft and brought the wheels safely down on the grass. Poor Fuzz stumbled out dizzy, nauseated, and trembling uncontrollably. "Ugh!" Fuzz muttered, rubbing his spinning head. "That is the absolute last time I will ever fly with Mel!"

Vocabulary: cautious: being very careful reckless: taking wild risks without care cockpit: the pilot's compartment

Comprehension Check:

  1. Why did Fuzz initially feel happy when the airplane first flew up into the sky?
  2. What aerial stunts did Mel perform that caused Fuzz to panic and get the shakes?

Memories of the Sweet Shop

The following afternoon in the kitchen, Josh asked curiously, "Gran, did you have a real job when you were a young girl?"

"I certainly did," Gran answered with a nostalgic smile. "My father was a confectioner who owned a charming neighborhood sweet shop, and I was hired to work behind the counter."

Josh's eyes sparkled at the thought of delicious desserts. "Did you actually get to create candy and sweets yourself?" he asked. Gran nodded proudly, "Indeed I did! I learned how to blend rich chocolate milkshakes, bake multi-layered vanilla cakes, and pour colorful sugary gumdrops into glass jars."

"Working in a candy store must have been non-stop fun!" Josh remarked. Gran paused thoughtfully and replied, "Some aspects were delightful, but it was not all fun and games. I also had serious chores to finish every day. I had to sweep up sugar spills, carry heavy inventory boxes, and scrub smudges off the glass cake display case until it shone."

Jen entered the kitchen and asked eagerly, "Gran, do you still remember your family recipe for baking delicious cakes?" Gran beamed with pride and pulled out a mixing bowl, "You can be absolutely certain I do! Would you two like to help me bake a fresh homemade cake right now?"

Vocabulary Spotter: nostalgic: fondly remembering the past confectioner: a person who makes candy and sweets inventory: goods and supplies stored in a shop

Comprehension Check (Answer using details from the text):

  1. What three delectable treats did Gran learn to make at her father's sweet shop?

The Tale of the Gloomy Queen

At bedtime, Josh asked, "Gran, will you tell us another story?" Jen suggested excitedly, "Tell the story about when you chased off an angry wild hog!" Josh interrupted, "No, tell the one where your ship was tossed about by howling winds and massive waves!" Gran chuckled, "Tonight, I will tell you a whimsical fairy tale that I invented myself. It is the story of a royal king and his gloomy queen."

Once upon a time in a royal palace, there lived a queen who was perpetually miserable. All day long, she sat on her golden throne, doing nothing but scowling, sulking, and moping. The gentle king felt devastated seeing his beloved wife so unhappy. Determined to lift her spirits, he cooked a hot skillet of fried eggs. But when he served the platter, the queen plugged her nose and complained that the eggs had a foul stench.

Next, the king baked an exquisite frosted cake, yet the queen waved it away in disgust. Then he crafted a bowl of sugary rainbow gumdrops, but she refused to taste even a single piece.

By this point, the king's sorrow had transformed into total irritation! Frustrated, he marched back into the royal kitchen, threw together bizarre vegetables and scrap ingredients, and brewed an unappetizing pot of thick green slop. "There!" the king scoffed. "This awful stew is not even fit to feed farm pigs! The queen will detest it, but I do not care anymore!"

He heaped the steaming green mixture onto a fine ceramic plate and placed it before the queen. To his astonishment, the queen took a cautious bite, smiled with sudden delight, and declared, "Mmm! This delicious stew is the finest culinary masterpiece I have ever tasted!" Josh and Jen giggled at the queen's surprising taste, and feeling contented, they peacefully drifted off to sleep.

Vocabulary Spotter: perpetually: lasting constantly or forever scoffed: spoke with mock or irritation culinary: related to cooking food

Comprehension Check (Answer using details from the text):

  1. What three foods did the king prepare first that the queen rejected?
  2. Why did the king decide to make a pot of green slop, and how did the queen react?

Journey to the Western Ranch

"I have finalized exciting plans for my next journey," Gran announced one morning. "My longtime pal Tex manages an expansive cattle ranch out in the American West, and I am traveling there for an outdoor vacation!" Gran smiled enthusiastically, but Josh and Jen suddenly looked crestfallen. "We are going to miss you terribly!" Jen said softly. Josh hung his head and asked, "What will we do here at home without you?"

Gran winked slyly and revealed her secret. "Well, how would you like to accompany me on the journey? Your parents gave full permission for both of you to travel out West with me!" Josh and Jen leaped into the air, cheering at the top of their lungs, "Yes! Please take us with you!"

The children zipped their travel bags with lightning speed. They hailed a yellow taxicab with Gran and headed directly to the airport. Inside the terminal, they boarded a large passenger jet. Jen glanced out the small window and asked apprehensively, "Will this flight be safe?" Gran patted her shoulder reassuringly, "Of course it will be safe and gentle—nothing like the turbulent flight Fuzz endured with Mel!"

When the plane touched down in the western desert, Gran rented a spacious van and drove the children toward the rugged hills. Waiting to greet them at the ranch gate was Tex. He was a towering, broad-shouldered cowboy wearing a wide-brimmed white hat. Tex warmly shook hands with Josh and Jen before greeting Gran with an enormous embrace.

Rescued by the Mule's Bells

At the ranch corral, Tex introduced the children to Sam, a sturdy brown pack mule. Sam wore heavy canvas equipment packs across his sturdy back and a decorative leather collar strung with shiny silver bells around his neck. "Sam is carrying our tents, sleeping bags, and camping supplies," Tex explained. Josh and Jen stroked the mule's soft ears, making Sam shake his head and chime his bells cheerfully.

Josh, Jen, and Gran hiked along the rugged mountain trail, leading Sam toward the designated campsite while Tex finished ranch chores. Upon reaching the clearing, Josh looped Sam's lead rope securely around a sturdy pine tree.

A few yards away, the group noticed the dark entrance of a cavern. Gran and the children cautiously peeked inside. Drip. Drip. The cavern was damp, chilly, and dimly illuminated; no warm sunshine reached past the rocky threshold. Curiosity drew them further into the winding underground passages.

They hiked deeper and deeper through the shadowy tunnels until they suddenly stopped. Every path looked identical in the darkness, and the entrance was nowhere in sight. They were completely lost, and a wave of panic washed over them!

Just as their dread deepened, the clear, melodic jingle of Sam's bells echoed from beyond the cavern walls. Sam was shaking his collar out by the pine tree! Following the rhythmic sound of the chiming bells, Josh, Jen, and Gran navigated through the tunnels and emerged into the bright afternoon sunlight. Relieved, Jen threw her arms around the faithful mule and exclaimed, "Sam, you and your bells rescued us from being lost!"

Confused and slightly worried, the children sought out their grandmother in the kitchen. "Gran," Jen asked with a concerned frown, "is Tex upset with us?" Gran looked surprised, "Upset? Whatever gives you that impression?" Jen explained, "He seemed peculiar. When I mentioned our walk along the creek, he only smiled." Josh chimed in, "And when I told him about the deer tracks, all he did was nod silently before hurrying away!"

A knowing grin spread across Gran's face. "Put on your boots, children," she chuckled. "We need to make a quick visit out to the equipment shed."

When they reached the wooden shed, the children stopped dead in their tracks. Standing before them was Tex in his familiar white cowboy hat—and standing directly beside him was the quiet man in the black cowboy hat! They possessed the exact same face, mustache, and posture! Jen stared in utter bewilderment: "If you are Tex, then who in the world is that?" Gran chuckled heartily, "Kids, meet Rex! Rex and Tex are identical twin brothers!"

Vocabulary Spotter: peculiar: strange or odd bewilderment: a state of complete confusion identical: looking exactly alike

Comprehension Check (Answer using details from the text):

  1. Why did Josh and Jen initially believe that Tex was mad at them?
  2. What surprise did Gran reveal when she walked the children to the equipment shed?

Gran's Roaring Mud Run

On Saturday, Gran, Tex, and the children arrived at the local off-road dirt arena. To the kids' amazement, Gran had entered herself as a driver in the annual Mud Run! Three heavy monster trucks with giant tires lined up abreast at the starting line: a glossy red truck, a menacing black truck, and Gran's trusty green machine.

The flagger waved the checkered banner, and the powerful engines roared as all three vehicles accelerated into the swampy arena. Gran drove with master skill. Her massive wheels churned through wet silt, slinging globs of mud straight across the black truck's windshield. Splat! From the grandstands, Josh and Jen screamed with excitement.

Gran completed five fast laps, but disaster struck on lap six when her tires sank deep into a treacherous muddy trench! As her wheels spun helplessly, the red and black trucks surged past. Keeping her composure, Gran rapidly shifted gears and rocked the chassis back and forth until the green truck hopped out of the ditch.

Gran stomped the accelerator pedal. With three laps remaining, she roared past the black truck. On the final lap, she was tailgating right behind the leading red truck. The red truck's tires kicked up a blinding shower of sludge across Gran's front glass. Unable to see clearly, Gran trusted her instincts and kept her foot floored!

The green and red trucks thundered across the finish line side by side! Gran climbed down from the mud-splattered cabin and shouted, "Did I win?" Josh and Jen cheered ecstatically, "Yes! You took first place!" The race official presented Gran with her championship prize: a stiff tire scrub brush, a large carton of cleaning rags, and a shiny tub of truck wax. Gran wiped her glasses with a chuckle: "Just what I need to restore my truck!"

Vocabulary Spotter: abreast: side by side facing the same way treacherous: hazardous or dangerous composure: calm self-control

Comprehension Check (Answer using details from the text):

  1. How did Gran free her green truck after getting stuck in the deep mud trench?

Gran's Daring Expedition Home

As the wonderful ranch vacation drew to an end, Gran embraced Josh and Jen warmly. "Tex will drive both of you safely home in his pickup truck," Gran instructed gently. Jen looked surprised and asked, "Are you boarding a commercial bus to return home, Gran?" Gran laughed, "No way! I am taking the scenic cross-country route!"

Gran unfolded a detailed topographical trail map across the table. "This navigational map will guide my solo journey home," she explained, tracing her finger across the contour lines. "Look here: I will pedal my touring bicycle through the desert until I reach Three Mile Gulch. Pedaling that rugged distance will require approximately one full week." Josh gasped in disbelief, "An entire week on a bicycle?!"

Gran nodded with a grin. "Once I reach the steep canyon, I will secure climbing ropes to traverse safely across Three Mile Gulch," Gran revealed. "From there, I will hike on foot over Pine Hill, which is nine miles of steep ascending trails." Josh shook his head, "Nine whole miles of climbing?!"

"After conquering Pine Hill, I will be quite close to my hometown," Gran concluded proudly. "It is merely a ten-mile walk from Pine Hill right to my front doorstep." Jen exclaimed, "Ten more miles on foot!" Tex adjusted his white cowboy hat and chuckled admiringly, "You children have got one extraordinarily tough, adventurous grandmother!"

As Gran adjusted her helmet, mounted her loaded bicycle, and pedaled down the dusty desert trail, Josh and Jen waved enthusiastically. Gran turned and called out with a wide smile, "Farewell, my favorite adventurers! I will see you both in six weeks!"

Vocabulary Spotter: topographical: showing land features like hills and valleys traverse: to travel across a challenging area ascending: sloping or rising upward

Comprehension Check (Answer using details from the text):
