PART 1
Opening Routine & Review
7 Minutes
1. The Hook (1.5 Mins)
Teacher says: "Scholars, today we enter the wacky, tongue-twisting world of Dr. Seuss! We have a tricky Fox in bright red socks who loves to play games with words. Have you ever tried to put socks on something silly—like your ears, or a cat?" (Call on 1-2 scholars). "Today our reading fingers are detectives that hunt down every word this Fox tries to twist!"
2. Good Reader CAP Call & Response (2.5 Mins)
T: "What do good readers read?"
Scholars: "The words!"
T: "Where do we start reading?"
Scholars: "On the top, left!"
T: "Which way does our finger move?"
Scholars: "Left to right!"
T: "How many times do we touch a word?"
Scholars: "One word, one touch!"
T: "What do we do at the end of a line?"
Scholars: "Return Sweep! Swoop back down!"
T: "What is the space between words called?"
Scholars: "Meatball space!"
3. Letters vs. Words & Spaces Review (1.5 Mins)
Teacher prompts: "What do letters make? (Words!) What do words make? (Sentences!) What kind of space is between letters inside a word? (Spaghetti space—tiny!). What kind of space is between whole words? (Meatball space—room for a meatball!)."
4. Text Preview & Author Study (1.5 Mins)
Teacher says: "Look at our front cover. Who is the author and illustrator? Dr. Seuss! He wrote the words AND drew the pictures. On the cover I see a sly fox wearing socks. Is this story true or made up? It's FICTION! A rhyming pattern book to test our reading fingers."

PART 2
Interactive Read Aloud & Guided CAP Tracking
15 Minutes
1 Stopping Point: Pages 3–5 ("Fox. Socks. Box. Knox.") Top-Left & 1-to-1 Touch
Teacher Action: Hold up text open to Page 4. "Watch my pointer. Where do I put my finger first? Yes, the very top, far left on the word Fox."
Model & CFU: Tap once under each word: "Fox. [tap] Socks. [tap] Box. [tap] Knox. [tap]." Ask: "How many words did I say? Four! How many times did my finger touch? Four! One word, one touch!"
2 Stopping Point: Pages 6–9 ("Knox in box. Fox in socks.") Return Sweep Action
Teacher Action: "Look at line 1: Knox in box. We reached the end of the line! What do good readers do now?"
Physical Routine: Teach the "Swoop!" motion. Hand swoops down and back to the left: "Return Sweep! Left to right, then SWOOP back to the left for line 2: Fox in socks!" Have scholars mimic in the air.
3 Stopping Point: Pages 10–13 ("Knox on fox in socks in box.") Meatball Space Detective
Scholar Volunteer: Invite 1 scholar up with the pointer. "Show the class where a meatball space is in this sentence. Why do we need that space?" (So words don't bump into each other!).
CFU: "Look at the word Knox. Point to the first letter (K). Point to the last letter (x)."
4 Stopping Point: Page Turns ("Socks on Knox and Knox in box.") Page-to-Page Sweep
Teacher says: "We finished all the words on this page. Where do we go now? We turn the page, and our eyes jump straight to the TOP LEFT of the new page!"
PART 3
Independent Practice & Informal CAP Assessment
6 Minutes
Task: Scholars complete the Fox Print Practice Worksheet. Working independently, scholars trace tracking dots, draw meatball spaces between words, and trace return sweep swoops.
1: Start Star
Circle the star at the top-left word of line 1.
2: 1-to-1 Dots
Touch & trace each tracking dot under each word.
3: Return Sweep
Trace the curved swoop from line 1 to line 2.
Teacher Observation: Circulate with checklist. Tap 4-5 scholars to read 1 line aloud. Check: (1) Top-left start, (2) 1-to-1 match, (3) Return sweep.
PART 4
Closing & Bottom Line Synthesis
2 Minutes
Teacher says: "Reading detectives, hold up your magic reading finger! Where does that finger start? (Top left!) Which way does it glide? (Left to right!) And when we hit the end of a line, what do we yell? Return Sweep Swoop! Superb work mastering print with Fox in Socks!"

Our 4 Big Reading Rules for Print
CAP Rules
1. Top, Far Left!
Always place your magic reading finger at the very top, far left word.
2. Left to Right!
Glide your eyes and finger across the page from the left to the right.
3. 1 Word, 1 Touch!
Every time your voice says one word, your finger taps that word once!
4. Return Sweep!
Hit the end of the line? Swoop down and back to the left for the next line!
Bottom Line: We read the words, not the pictures!

Common Misconceptions & Rapid Interventions:
Finger slides too fast: Give scholar dot stickers or counting chips to physically tap under each word.
Forgets return sweep: Draw a green dot at line 1 start and a red swoop arrow connecting to line 2.
Confuses letters with words: Frame whole word using two index fingers ("word windows").
