Let People Own Exotic Animals
Argument by Zuzana Kukol • Adapted from USA Today
Author's Claim / Afirmación: Responsible people should be allowed to own exotic animals.
Reading Passage • Texto de Lectura Read & annotate / Lee y anota
[1] In Zanesville, Ohio, an owner of wild animals set them free. Most were killed to protect people nearby. Because of this sad event, people asked: Should it be legal, or lawful, to own wild and exotic animals?
[2] The author, Zuzana Kukol, says it should be legal . One bad owner is not a reason to ban everyone. Most owners care for their animals. Breeding in facilities prevents overcrowding and stops species from going extinct.
Targeted Key Passage • Pasaje Clave
"Dangers from exotic animals are low. On average in the United States, only 3.25 people per year are killed by captive big cats, snakes, elephants and bears. Most of these fatalities are owners and trainers voluntarily on the property. Meanwhile, traffic accidents kill about 125 people per day ."
[3] People have freedoms to choose their cars and pets. Kukol argues that banning exotic pets because of one accident is foolish—like banning cars because of traffic accidents!

Wild Animals Aren't Pets
Argument by USA Today Editorial Board • Adapted text
Author's Claim / Afirmación: For safety and kindness, no wild animal should be kept as a pet.
Reading Passage • Texto de Lectura Read & annotate / Lee y anota
[1] Wild animals belong in nature. In some states, anyone with money can easily buy a python, bear, or tiger. However, keeping wild animals is dangerous for humans and cruel to animals. For safety and kindness, no wild animal should be a pet.
[2] Owners claim attacks are rare, but the author shows that wild predators kept at home lead to real tragedies and severe injuries.
Targeted Key Passage • Pasaje Clave
"In 2009, a 2-year-old Florida girl was strangled by a 12-foot Burmese python pet. That same year, a Connecticut woman was mauled and disfigured by a neighbor's chimp. A caretaker was killed by a collector's bear. In Zanesville, 18 rare Bengal tigers became innocent victims when they were shot."
[3] Federal laws only ban sales of certain big cats, leaving primates and reptiles unprotected. Many states have weak or no laws, putting innocent lives at risk.

Model Student Annotations:
• Claim [★]: Paragraph 2: Underline "says it should be legal... one bad owner is not a reason to ban everyone."
• Statistics [#]: Targeted Passage: Circle "3.25 people per year" and "125 people per day."
• Cognates [?]: Box exotic (exótico) , fatalities (fatalidades) , voluntarily (voluntariamente) , extinct (extinto) .
Question 1 (Main Claim): Correct Answer: B 1 Point
Rationale: Kukol directly argues that responsible individuals should be permitted to own exotic animals and that one irresponsible owner in Ohio should not strip rights from everyone. (Options A, C, and D misstate the text).
Question 2 (Evidence & Statistics): Exemplar Short Response 2 Points
Model English Answer: "The author compares animal deaths to car crashes to show that the risk of dying from an exotic pet is extremely low. Only 3.25 people die per year from captive exotic animals compared to 125 people every day in traffic accidents, proving that exotic pets are not as dangerous as people think."
Part 2 Key "Wild Animals Aren't Pets" (USA Today Editorial) Page 2 of Student Packet
Model Student Annotations:

• Victims [V]: Circle "18 rare Bengal tigers" , "2-year-old Florida girl" , "caretaker."
• Weak Laws [L]: Paragraph 3: Box "Federal laws only ban sales of certain big cats, leaving primates and reptiles unprotected."
Question 1 (Author's Purpose): Correct Answer: B 1 Point
Rationale: The editorial explicitly states in Paragraph 1 that "for reasons of human safety and kindness to animals, no wild animal should be kept as a pet."
Question 2 (Analyzing Evidence): Exemplar Short Response 2 Points
Model English Answer: "The author calls the 18 Bengal tigers innocent victims because they did not choose to be locked in cages, and they were killed through no fault of their own after their irresponsible owner set them loose into the community."
Respuesta Modelo en Español: "El autor llama a los 18 tigres víctimas inocentes porque ellos no eligieron estar en jaulas ni pidieron ser liberados; murieron sin tener la culpa debido a la negligencia de su dueño."

Zuzana Kukol ("Let People Own"):
• Core Argument: Ownership should be legal for responsible citizens.
• Evidence: National statistics (3.25 deaths/yr vs. 125 daily car deaths).
• Perspective on Ohio: An isolated event caused by one irresponsible person; should not restrict others.
USA Today ("Wild Animals Aren't Pets"):
• Core Argument: Wild animals should never be kept as household pets.
• Evidence: Documented attacks (python suffocation, chimp mauling, bear death).
• Perspective on Ohio: Proof that keeping apex predators in residential areas inevitably causes disaster.
Activity 2: Comparing Authors' Conclusions (Ohio Tragedy) 3 Points
Exemplar Student Response: "Both authors examine the tragedy in Zanesville, Ohio, but draw opposite conclusions. Kukol concludes that Ohio was just one bad owner and that responsible owners should not lose their rights because of one man's foolish actions. In contrast, USA Today concludes that Ohio proves wild predators are too unpredictable for private owners and that keeping them puts neighbors and animals in extreme danger."
Activity 3: Opinion Quick-Write Scoring Guide & Dual Exemplars 4 Points Total
Claim (1 Pt): Clearly states which author's argument is more convincing.
Evidence (1 Pt): Cites specific evidence (numbers, attacks, laws) from text.
Reasoning (1 Pt): Explains why that evidence proves the claim.
Conventions (1 Pt): Uses complete sentences & academic stems.
Exemplar A: In Favor of Kukol
"In my opinion, Zuzana Kukol presents the stronger argument because she uses statistical facts. For example, she states that only 3.25 people die per year from captive exotic pets compared to 125 people daily in car accidents. This proves that exotic animals are not an everyday threat and that responsible owners should keep their freedoms."
Exemplar B: In Favor of USA Today
"In my opinion, USA Today presents the more convincing argument because real-life tragedies show the true danger. For example, the text describes how a pet python strangled a 2-year-old child and 18 innocent Bengal tigers had to be killed in Ohio. This evidence proves that wild animals can never be tamed and keeping them harms both people and animals."
Bilingual / ELD Teacher Tip: Accept responses in English, Spanish, or translanguaged drafts as long as the student demonstrates text comprehension, cites textual evidence, and explains their reasoning.
