LITERARY EVIDENCE EVALUATION SCALE
GOLD (1st Place)
Direct & Explicit: Directly proves the claim. No wild logic leaps or guesses required.
SILVER (2nd Place)
Circumstantial: Related to the topic, but requires a big leap in logic or is incomplete.
BRONZE (3rd Place)
Weak or Irrelevant: Uses similar words but doesn't prove the claim, or is general background.

The fog had swallowed the coast three days ago, thick and smelling of wet copper. In the lantern room of Blackwood Reef, Arthur polished the brass gears of the lens, his hands trembling in rhythm with the ticking machine. "It’s just the wind," he whispered to the empty spiral staircase. But the wind didn’t tap in three-beat pulses. The wind didn’t call his name in his late mother's voice. He gripped the iron railing, staring out into the blinding gray. A ship was out there, he was sure of it. He had to keep the light turning, even as the walls seemed to breathe in and out, pressing closer with every tick of the clock. He hadn't slept in forty-eight hours, fearing that if he closed his eyes, the whispering brass would finally tell him its secrets.

By midnight, the storm roared, shaking the iron foundation of the tower. Arthur’s chest burned with exhaustion, his limbs heavy as lead. The oil reservoir was dangerously low; the light would die in minutes without a fresh canister. He looked at the wooden trapdoor leading to the flooded basement where the oil was stored. The stairs down there were slick with dark sea-foam, and he could hear a low scratching sound from beneath the planks. Every nerve screamed at him to lock himself in his bedroom. Instead, Arthur grabbed the heavy iron key, threw open the trapdoor, and descended into the dark. "Keep the light burning," he muttered, his voice cracking. "The ships are counting on the beacon."

This worksheet guides students to differentiate between strong, moderate, and weak evidence. Emphasize that strong evidence (Gold) directly supports the claim without logic leaps. Weak evidence (Bronze) often contains "distractors" (e.g., repeating a keyword from the prompt without proving the actual point of the claim).
MISCONCEPTION ALERTS & STRATEGIES
1. The "Word-Match" Trap: Students often choose a quote because it contains a word from the claim (e.g., selecting Quote A in Case Study 2 because it has the word "exhaustion", even though it doesn't prove "commitment to duty"). Fix: Ask, "Does this sentence show him actually prioritizing his work, or just being tired?"
2. The "True But Unhelpful" Trap: Students pick Quote C in Case Study 2 because it's true and sets the scene, but it has nothing to do with Arthur's choices. Fix: Ask, "Does this describe the machine, or does it describe Arthur's character traits?"
