do + not =

Ready to crunch some words? Slide 1 of 6
The Big Concept
What Is a Contraction?
A Shorter Word
The word contract means to shrink or squeeze smaller. A contraction squeezes two words into one!
💡 We use them when we talk and write everyday stories!
Letters Disappear!
When two words smash together, one or two letters get pushed out and vanish into thin air.
Who takes their place? Meet the apostrophe!
Rule: Two words go in → One shorter word comes out! Slide 2 of 6
The Hero Punctuation
Meet the Apostrophe (')
'
The apostrophe is a letter placeholder. It floats up high right where letters were kicked out!
Step 1: Start
is not
Two separate words
Step 2: Drop Letter
is n o t
The "o" flies away!
Step 3: Crunch!
isn't
Apostrophe fills the spot!
Watch out: An apostrophe floats high in the air isn't, not on the ground like a comma isn,t!

🩹 Band-Aid Word Surgery
Write two words on an index card (e.g., is not). Have students use scissors to cut out the letter o. Then, place a small band-aid or sticker with an apostrophe drawn on it to bridge the gap into isn't!
📜 The Accordion Word Fold
Write the first word on the left fold, the dropped letters on an inner pleated fold, and the ending on the right. When pushed together, the middle disappears and the apostrophe pops into view!
