Dr. Evelyn Vane

The Serious Tower Archivist

Grades 5–8 • Observant Role

1. Exactly What to Read (Speak strictly & loudly): [Cross arms authoritatively]

"I am Dr. Evelyn Vane, the head archivist. At 8:15 PM, I was cataloging the founder's documents at my reading desk. When the lamps died, I leapt to my feet and shouted, 'Who is near the vault?' I heard someone scramble down the iron steps!"

2. What You Know Privately (Secret Observations):

• Dropped Tool: You knocked your silver magnifying glass off your desk in the dark.

• The Shoes: You wear spotless size 7 leather dress shoes (completely clean, zero coal).

• Suspicious Whispers: Right before 8:15, you saw Clara whispering to Barnaby in the hall.

3. When Questioned (Stand Your Ground):

"Why was your magnifying glass by the vault?": "I stumbled when the lights crashed! I never opened the case."

"What did you see before the lights cut?": "Clara Sterling was talking very quietly with Barnaby near the courtyard."

"Check your shoes!": "Spotless leather. No grease, no soot. Check the boots of the others!"

Clara Sterling

The Wealthy Collector (The Mastermind!)

Grades 7–8 • Mastermind Role

1. Exactly What to Read (Speak very politely & calmly): [Smile with cold confidence]

"Good evening. I am Clara Sterling, an antique appraiser. I was waiting peacefully beside the parlor fireplace when the blackout occurred. I remained seated, calmly protecting my leather portfolio until the lamps reignited."

2. What You Know Privately (Secret - You Hired Him!):

• YOU PAID THE BRIBE: You gave Barnaby 20 silver shillings at 7:45 PM to steal the Chronometer.

• The Bag: You brought a custom bag lined in purple velvet for Barnaby to put the gear in.

• You never set foot near the greasy gears—your hands and silk slippers are pristine.

3. When Questioned (Act Innocently Outraged):

"Why did you give Barnaby money?": "A harmless deposit for a small antique music box he is fixing for me."

"What about the purple velvet scrap?": "Many luxury bags use velvet. Are you accusing me based on a thread?"

"Did you run in the dark?": "In these designer silk shoes? Certainly not. I stayed by the warm fire."
