Guided Reading & Differentiation Routines
Reader: Snap Shots
3 Movement: Wiggle Cards Routine (5 min)
Decoding In Action
Hold up each card. Have students silently decode the phrase, then perform the action on cue:
"hop on one leg" Action: balance & hop
"nod your head" Action: nod up and down
"pat a pal" Action: gentle shoulder pat
4 Guided Reading: "Beth" from Snap Shots (15 min)
Pages 2โ7
Step A: Preview & Purpose for Reading
Show cover of Snap Shots . Point to title "Beth". Script: "Today we meet Beth. Look at the photo on page 2. What pet does Beth have? Read today to discover what Beth and her pet like to do in the mud."
Step B: Reading Protocol
First Read: Whisper-reading in pairs. Partner 1 reads page 2 while Partner 2 tracks with finger. Swap roles for page 4. Circulate to check blending accuracy on short vowel words: pig, mud, big, pen.
Step C: Text-Dependent Comprehension Prompts
Literal (CCSS RL.1.1): "What kind of pet does Beth have?" Expected: Beth has a pet pig.
Inferential (CCSS RL.1.1): "Why is the pig wet and glad?" Expected: The pig ran and sat in mud.
CKLA Differentiation & Pausing Point Check
Support / Tier 2 Intervention
If students confuse /a/ and /o/ during chaining, hold up mirror cards or reference the mouth gestures (unrounded smile for /a/, rounded circle for /o/). Conduct 3-sound tactile tapping with finger tap mats.
Challenge & Extension
Students who decode CVC words fluently write a 2-word caption for each picture in Activity 11.1 using decodable phrases (e.g., "hot pot", "big pig") and complete the story expansion prompt.
