The Golden Cage: Rules vs. Choice
Imagine a world where you never have to make a scary choice. You are told exactly what to wear, what to eat, and what your job will be. This is a highly controlled society. It is very safe, but there is no freedom.
In Chapter 1 of The Giver , we meet Jonas. He is feeling apprehensive about the upcoming Ceremony of Twelve. In his community, a special committee chooses every career. Even a nurturer —someone who cares for new babies—must be assigned by the leaders.
Having no choices means you never make a mistake. But in this world, there are severe punishments for any transgression . If you break the strict rules three times, you are "released" from the community forever.

Choice Cage Summary
Take this summary home to read with your family, then answer the two quick check-in questions below.
The Story So Far: Chapter 1 Summary
Jonas is an eleven-year-old boy living in a very clean, quiet, and orderly community. In Jonas's world, there are no choices, no war, and no mistakes. Every rule is decided by a powerful committee of leaders. However, Jonas is feeling extremely apprehensive —which means nervous and a little bit scared. Soon, he will turn twelve and attend the Ceremony of Twelve. At this ceremony, the leaders will choose his lifelong career for him. Jonas has no idea what job they will pick, and the waiting makes him very anxious.
We also meet Jonas's family during their nightly "sharing of feelings." His father is a nurturer , which means his job is to feed and protect newborn babies who are not yet strong enough. His mother works in law enforcement, helping to enforce the community's strict rules. Jonas learns that breaking rules is incredibly serious. Committing a transgression (breaking a rule) three times means a citizen is "released" from the community forever, which is a scary and mysterious punishment.
Family Check-In Questions
1. Why is Jonas feeling apprehensive about the Ceremony of Twelve? Explain using one detail from the summary.
2. What is a transgression, and what happens to a person who commits three of them?
Family Talk Tip: Ask your parents or guardians: Would they rather have their jobs chosen for them like Jonas's dad, or choose their own jobs?
