The Clockwork Crow
Maya loved visiting her grandfather’s workshop. It was a wonderland of spinning brass gears, silent clocks, and shelves overflowing with vintage watch parts. Every Saturday afternoon, while her grandfather quietly repaired delicate pocket watches at his bench, Maya explored the hidden corners of the room.
One rainy Saturday, she spotted a small, dark wooden box tucked behind a stack of blue leather journals on a high shelf. Standing on her tiptoes, she carefully pulled it down. Inside rested a tiny metal bird with dull bronze wings, interlocking brass legs, and eyes of polished green glass. A small winding key lay right next to it.
Grandfather smiled warmly from his magnifying glass. "Ah, the clockwork crow," he said. "Give the key a turn, Maya." She inserted the key and wound it three times. Click. Click. Click. At first, the bird was still. Then, a soft hum vibrated from its chest, its glass eyes glowed green, and its wings began to flap.
The bird lifted into the air, circled the cozy room twice, and landed on top of the ancient grandfather clock in the corner. It tapped its tiny brass beak three times on the glass face: tap, tap, tap.
Maya rushed over. Hidden in the clock frame where the bird tapped, she discovered a secret compartment containing a shiny brass key and a personal letter addressed directly to her. She gasped, looking back at her grandfather, who smiled and winked.
