100 Scaffolded Reading Prompts for Grades 4-5 Struggling Readers

Teacher's Quick Implementation Guide
1. Speak, Then Write: Before putting pencil to paper, have students whisper-read the prompt and share their verbal response with a partner for 30 seconds.
2. Enforce Sentences: Require answers to be complete sentences. Use the printable scaffolding cards on Page 4 to provide immediate starter frames.
3. Micro-Assess: Score responses daily on a 1-3 scale (1=Idea only, 2=Sentence frame used, 3=Sentence + text evidence).
Category 1: Character Clues (Prompts 1-25)
Focus: Traits, Actions, Motives & Changes
1 Write 3 words to describe the main character. Why did you choose them?
2 Describe how the main character feels right now. Write one text clue.
3 What is something the character did that completely surprised you?
4 If the character sent you a text message right now, what would it say?
5 Find one line of dialogue. What does this line show about the speaker?
6 Is the main character a leader or a follower? Give one detail.
7 What is the character's biggest wish or goal in this part of the text?
8 Name a rule this character has to follow. Do they like or dislike it?
9 If this character went to your school, would they fit in? Why or why not?
10 Describe the character's appearance using words from the passage.
11 How does the character react when things get really difficult?
12 Who is the main character's best friend or ally? How do they help?
13 What mistake did a character make? What did they learn from it?
14 Is there a character in the text you do not trust? Explain why.
15 If the character had a superpower based on their personality, what is it?
16 Write one way you and the main character are exactly the same.
17 Write one way you and the main character are completely different.
18 What makes this character happy? Use a detail from the text.
19 How does the character change from the start of the text to the end?
20 Pick a minor character. Why are they important to the story?
21 What is a secret the character might be keeping from others?
22 If you could talk to the character, what advice would you give them?
23 Find a word that describes a character's voice. What does it reveal?

25 Would you want to spend a Saturday with this character? Why or why not?

29 What is an unexpected obstacle that blocks a character's goal?
30 List three main events in chronological order: First, Next, and Finally.
31 How does the character attempt to solve their problem in this section?
32 What triggers the main argument or disagreement between characters?
33 Find a moment where the story moves quickly. What word clues show speed?
34 What has been the most exciting or suspenseful event in the story so far?

53 Does the setting feel warm and cozy, or cold and scary? Explain why.
54 Describe the main location. Is it crowded or empty? Support with a clue.
55 How does the setting change from the start of the passage to the end?
56 What season or time of year is it? What textual clues helped you figure it out?
57 If this setting was a color, what color would it be? Explain your choice.
58 Would you want to live in the environment described in this book? Why or why not?

Scaffolding Micro-Tip: "The 3-Step Model" Struggling readers often do not know how to start writing. Before releasing them to answer independently, show them how to: 1. Repeat parts of the question in their answer, 2. Use a connecting word (like "because"), and 3. Finish the sentence.
