Percy, Annabeth, and Grover have a three-hour train layover in St. Louis. Annabeth loves architecture, so they ride an elevator to the observation deck of the 600-foot-tall Gateway Arch to view the city and the muddy Mississippi River.
Percy lets other tourists ride the elevator down first and stays behind. A tourist woman reveals she is Echidna, the Mother of Monsters! Her tiny pet chihuahua transforms into the Chimera, a terrifying beast with a lion's head, a goat's body, and a poisonous snake tail.
Percy tries to fight with his sword, Riptide, but the Chimera breathes blistering fire and strikes his leg with poison. The beast blasts a gaping hole in the Arch floor. Trapped and burning with venom, Percy prays to his father, Poseidon, and leaps hundreds of feet out the hole straight into the Mississippi River below!
