DAY 1 Topic Sentences (T)
Starting Your Paragraph
Your Topic Sentence is sentence number one. It must do two jobs:

Arctic Polar Bear
Polar bears live in the freezing Arctic. They have special white fur that traps heat from the sun to warm up their black skin. Under their skin, they have thick fat called blubber . This blubber acts like a warm sleeping bag to keep them safe in winter storms. Polar bears also have wide paws that work like snowshoes so they do not sink in the deep snow.
HOT ENVIRONMENT
Desert Camel
Camels live in the hot, dry desert. They store fat in their humps . They use this fat for extra energy when they cannot find food or water. Camels also have a clear third eyelid. This works like built-in goggles to keep blowing sand out of their eyes. Finally, camels have flat, tough feet that work like sandshoes so they do not sink in the soft sand.

Notice how the strong sentence is formal and directly answers the question.
DAY 2 Excellent Evidence (E)
Proving Your Answer
Now that you shared your opinion, you need proof . Your evidence must come straight from the text!
Put quotation marks "..." around the author's exact words.
Start your sentence with a special starter.
Evidence Starters

According to the text, "...exact words..."
For example, "...exact words..."
These starters let the reader know you found real proof!

❌ WRONG WAY (No Quotes, No Starter)
They have blubber under their skin that is like a sleeping bag. (Missing quote marks and starter!)
Always double-check that you copied the quote word-for-word.
DAY 3 Expert Explanations (X)
Connecting the Dots
The eXplain step is the most important part of your paragraph. You must tell the reader why your proof is important!
This sentence connects your Evidence (E) directly back to your Topic Sentence (T).

This is important because it shows the polar bear's body works like a heater. The sun warms them up so they do not freeze in the snow.
❌ WEAK EXPLANATION
This means that they have black skin and white fur that traps heat. (This is just repeating the facts, not explaining them!)
Don't just repeat the quote. Tell the reader why that quote proves your choice!
DAY 4 Tie Up and Summarize (T)
Closing with Impact
Your final Tie Up sentence wraps up your thoughts and lets the reader know you are finished.
Think of it like a beautiful ribbon tied on a present. You repeat your opinion in a new way to close your writing.

This grading guide helps you score each sentence of the student's final paragraph. We focus on clear sentence structure, copying text evidence accurately, and logical reasons. Score students out of a total of 12 points.
Sentence 3 - Meets Grade Level 2 - Developing 1 - Beginning T Topic Sentence Repeats the writing question, shares a clear choice, and gives a short reason. No personal phrases like "I think". Shares a choice but uses weak starters like "I like", "I think", or copies the question word-for-word. Does not clearly name an animal or choice. Writes a single word or unrelated detail. E Evidence Starts with an evidence starter ("The author states,") and copies a direct quote correctly in quotation marks. Provides direct evidence from the passage but forgets quote marks, or has some missing words. Missing a starter. Vague summary of an idea. No quote, no starter, and doesn't match the reading passage. X Explain Tells why that physical adaptation is useful for survival in its environment. Connects the quote back to the topic. Uses an explanation starter ("This is important...") but only repeats the quote in simpler words. No reasoning. Leaves out the explanation sentence entirely. Writes an unrelated thought. T Tie Up Concludes the paragraph with a nice transition ("In conclusion," / "Ultimately,") and repeats the main choice in a fresh way. Closes paragraph, but repeats the Day 1 topic sentence exactly or uses repetitive phrasing. No concluding sentence. Paragraph stops abruptly on the explanation.
