Stadium Readers Club

The 'Stadium Readers Club' is a high-interest, sports-themed reading intervention program designed specifically for reluctant entering 5th graders. It integrates phonics, word study, and reading comprehension across a 6-week schedule, utilizing the child's passion for the New York Yankees, New York Knicks, and soccer.

Week 1 Draft Picks

Focuses on multisyllabic decoding using the VC/CV syllable division rule ('Syllable Cut') with a New York Yankees and stadium-history theme. Direct instruction guides the student through isolating, dividing, and blending word parts to boost reading automaticity.

Week 2 Vowel Offense

Targets vowel teams (ee, ea, oa, ai, ay) in multisyllabic sports words using a New York Knicks and basketball court theme. Student learns to double-team the vowels to identify long vowel sounds in high-interest reading passages.

Week 3 Diphthong Defense

Explores complex diphthongs (ou, ow, oi, oy) within high-action professional soccer and stadium contexts. Students practice dividing and blending vowel shifts under pressure to improve decoding speed and overall comprehension.

Week 4 Prefixes Play

Introduces high-utility prefixes (re-, pre-, dis-, un-) within baseball-themed reading material. Students practice pulling apart structural word parts to decipher word meanings and improve reading flow.

Week 5 Suffix Showdown

Highlights core suffixes (-less, -ful, -ment, -able) within basketball-themed contexts. Students master how suffix endings alter parts of speech and develop strategies to blend them effortlessly.

Week 6 Championship Finish

Integrates syllables, vowel patterns, prefixes, and suffixes in an ultimate multi-sport championship recap. This final week reviews all decoding strategies and evaluates the student's fluency and confidence.
