MISSION SCRIPT: DIRECT PHONICS MODELING
🗣️ Step 1: Letter Sound (Phoneme) isolation
"Class, look at this. It's a Spaceship! Spaceship starts with the sound /s/ /s/ /s/. Let's make that sound like rocket thrusters letting out steam... ssssss. Your turn!"
✍️ Step 2: Correct Tracing Movement
"Watch my hand. We start at the solid dot (1), curve back like a slithering snake in space, then curve around to the bottom. Everyone put your star fingers in the air. Curve... slide... curve! Excellent! Now, try it on your Launchpad page."
🔮 Step 3: Multi-Sensory Extension (Optional)
"Pour a thin layer of glitter or salt onto your desk tray. Trace the letter A, and say: /æ/ Astronaut! when you finish."
Avoid This Trap
Don't add the "schwa" sound to consonants. Pronounce T as /t/ (crisp and dry), not /tʌ/. Pronounce P as /p/ (unvoiced puff), not /pʌ/.
Differentiation Strategy
Support: Use a highlighter to pre-draw the paths for students struggling with grip.
Challenge: Have them spell and write "NAP", "PAN", and "TAPS" on extra scrap paper.

Speed Check
This week is a rapid review designed to spot-check form and identify sound-gaps before entering complex phonics next week.
WEEK 2 PACING LOG
Day Region Focus Instructional Focus Workbook Alignment Day 1 Rocky Planets (A-G) Emphasize starting strokes at the top. Model "Comet" (/k/) and "Earth" (/ɛ/). Page 1: Letters A to G Day 2 Asteroid Belt (H-N) Ensure horizontal crossbars for H are perfectly aligned with the dashed midline. Page 2: Letters H to N Day 3 Gas Giants (O-U) Practice counter-clockwise circles for O. Sound out short vowel sounds for O and U. Page 3: Letters O to U Day 4 Deep Space (V-Z) Check angular slants for V, W, X, Y. Prevent rounding of lines. Page 4: Letters V to Z Day 5 Speed Run! Play "What's My Sound?" - hold up a letter flashcard and have cadets echo the correct space-sound keyword. A-Z Completion Certificate prep
DISCOVERY INSTRUCTION: MODELING BASELINES
🗣️ baseline alignment rule:
"Cadets, look at our workbook lines. They are like rocket launch tracks! The bottom line is the solid launching pad. Your capital letters should sit directly on that pad, never floating in outer space. Let's practice drawing a perfect B sitting on the pad."
✍️ Modeling the letter J (Hangdown Letter):
"Now look at lowercase j. It's a special letter because its tail goes BELOW the launch pad into deep space! Watch me draw the hook descending underneath, and pop a little stardust dot right above the dashed midline."
Avoid This Trap
Don't allow letter shapes to become soft or bubbly. Ensure vertical lines remain vertical and angles remain sharp to maintain professional manuscript print.
Speed Modification
For students who write slowly, prioritize the letters C, H, M, O, R as they have high motor utility for upcoming consonant-vowel blends.

Week 3: Short Vowels vs. Consonants
TEACHER-FACING
RESOURCE
Target Skills
Identify short sounds of A, E, I, O, U
Contrast vowels with consonants
Construct CVC words with visual models
Vowel Battery
Explain to students that vowels are the "engine batteries" of words—nearly every English word needs a vowel to run!
Tactile Focus
Pair each short vowel sound with a distinct hand motion (e.g., hold hand near ear for Short E /ɛ/, like a question).
WEEK 3 PACING LOG
Day Vowel Focus Interactive Sound Drill Workbook Alignment Day 1 Short A & E Compare "apple" (/æ/) vs "egg" (/ɛ/). Practice quick sound shifts. Page 1: Tracing A & E Stars Day 2 Short I, O, U Compare "ich" (/ɪ/), "octopus" (/ɑ/), and "up" (/ʌ/). Trace stars. Page 1: Tracing I, O, U Stars Day 3 Vowel Sort Run a "Constellation vs Asteroid" board sort using letter magnets. Page 2: Sorting Board Sort Day 4 CVC Chains Model word-building by swapping vowels: "cat" ➔ "cot" ➔ "cut". Page 2: CVC Sentence Launch Day 5 Sound Challenge Give cadets the "What's in the Middle?" sound game using short sounds. Star Sticker reward session
DIRECT PHONICS MODEL: SOUND BINDING
🗣️ Step 1: Explaining the Role of Vowels
"Cadets, imagine our rocket has consonants for the body, but it can't fly without battery fuel! Vowels are that fuel. Listen to this sound: /b/ - /g/. That's hard to say, right? Now let's pop a Short U battery sound in the middle: /b/ - /ʌ/ - /g/ ➔ bug! The vowel made the word fly!"
✍️ Step 2: Interactive Vowel/Consonant Sorting Board
"Class, grab your workbook. We have floating space letters. The vowels—a, e, i, o, u—belong in the glowing yellow Vowel Sector. Write them down with neat manuscript lines. The rest are consonants—they go in the blue Sector!"
Avoid This Trap
Don't let students confuse Short E (/ɛ/ as in jet) and Short I (/ɪ/ as in fin). Sound them side-by-side: "jet", "git", "let", "lit" to build clean phonemic boundaries.
Cosmic Sorting Game
Put giant colored circles on the floor: a "Vowel Constellation Star" and a "Consonant Asteroid". Show a letter on a card; have cadets hop to the correct sector!

WEEK 4 PACING LOG
Day Reversal Focus Direct Intervention Guide Workbook Alignment Day 1 b vs d Trace and say: "bat before ball" (b) vs "doorknob then door" (d). Page 1: Color b & d Asteroids Day 2 p vs q Show how lowercase p faces the right (pointing) vs lowercase q (queen curly tail). Page 1: Tracing the p-path Day 3 t vs f Highlight top hook and crossbars. Contrast /t/ and /f/ initial sounds. Page 1: Telemetry and Flares Day 4 Independent print Enforce vertical letter formation. Keep standard space between words. Page 2: Manuscript Writing lines Day 5 Graduation Have cadets write their names independently, then distribute graduation certificates. Commander Signatures Log
DIRECT SCRIPT MODEL: SHIELDING REVERSALS
🗣️ Step 1: b vs d physical anchor
"Class, hold up both thumbs! Make your circles touch in the middle. Look! That spells 'bed'. Your left hand makes the b, and your right hand makes the d! Let's say that together: b comes first, d comes last. Perfect."
✍️ Step 2: Transitioning to independent writing
"Now look at Page 2. There are no tracing dots here! You are the commander of your own hand. We are printing 'The sun is hot'. Start at the top margin, slide down straight, lift, and make a clean space before the next word using your pointer finger."
Avoid This Trap
Don't overlook "p" and "q" reversals on the floor. Address immediately using a mirror—pointing out how sounds are physically produced.
Certificate Tip
Print the Graduation Certificate on heavy cardstock. Have students color and decorate the star borders using glitter pens or galaxy stickers.
