How a Fossil Forms
Fossils are the preserved remains of ancient life. First, an animal or plant dies and its body sinks to the bottom of a river or sea. Soon after, sediment like sand and mud covers the remains. This protects the body from scavengers. Over millions of years, more layers of sediment pile up. The weight turns these layers into solid rock. Next, minerals from water seep into the bones and turn them into stone. Finally, the rock is pushed to the surface or eroded by wind, revealing the fossil to the world.

RI.1 Mastery
Earth exists in a closed system, meaning it does not receive new water from space. Instead, the planet must endlessly recycle its water through a rhythmic sequence known as the water cycle.
This continuous movement of water on and above the Earth's surface is driven by two powerful forces: the energy of the sun and the pull of gravity. To function, water must transition through several stages in a specific, predictable order.
1 Initially: The Great Ascent
The journey initially begins when solar radiation strikes the surface of the Earth. As the sun’s energy warms liquid water in oceans and lakes, the molecules transform into an invisible gas called water vapor. Simultaneously, plants participate through transpiration, releasing vapor from their leaves. Because this warm vapor is lighter than air, it rises high into the atmosphere.
2 As a Result: The Gathering Clouds
As water vapor climbs higher, it encounters cooler air. As a result of this temperature drop, the vapor loses energy and cools down, clustering around microscopic particles of dust. This transformation into tiny liquid droplets is called condensation. Gathered together, these droplets form the visible clouds that float across our sky.
3 Following This: The Heavy Return
Following this period of gathering, droplets within the clouds collide and grow larger. Eventually, they become too heavy for air currents to support. Gravity pulls the water back toward the Earth's surface as precipitation (rain, snow, or hail). This step is critical because it redistributes fresh water back to the land and sea.
4 Ultimately: The Journey Home
Once on the ground, water enters the final phase. Eventually, the water soaks into the soil (infiltration) or flows across the surface as runoff. Gravity pulls this runoff into streams and rivers, which ultimately carry it back to the oceans. Because the sun continues to shine, the water will soon be warmed again, restarting the sequence.
