Lesson: Sound Explorers (SATP)
DURATION
45-60 MIN
Objective
Students will identify the sounds for the letters s, a, t, p and recognize words that begin with these initial phonemes. They will practice letter formation through skywriting and tracing.
Materials Needed
- Sound Explorer Slides
- Sound Matcher Worksheet (1 per student)
- Letter Hunt Activity (1 per student)
- Pencils / Crayons
The "How-To" for Sounds
S
/s/s/s/
Continuous sound. Tongue behind teeth, air hissed out. "Like a leaky tire."
A
/a/a/a/
Vowel sound. Jaw drops low, tongue flat. "Like a doctor checking your throat."
T
/t/t/t/
Stop sound. Tongue tip taps roof behind teeth. Short and sharp.
P
/p/p/p/
Stop sound. Lips press together and release a puff of air. No voice!
Instructional Flow

Introduce the Mission (10 min)
Use the Sound Explorer Slides to hook students. Tell them they are Sound Detectives today. Introduce each letter, focus on the articulation tips, and have students repeat the sound 5 times.

Guided Practice: Skywriting (5 min)
While on the final slide, have students stand up. Model drawing large letters in the air using your whole arm. Remind them to say the sound as they "draw" the letter.

Independent Work: Matching (15 min)
Distribute the Sound Matcher Worksheet. Assist students with tracing and emphasize checking the first sound of each picture out loud before matching.

Active Exploration: Hunt (15 min)
Distribute the Letter Hunt Activity. Allow students to move safely around the classroom to find objects. For younger students, you can pre-place objects around the room that match the sounds.
