Lesson 1: People & Titles
Time
45 Min
Objectives
• Identify common abbreviations for titles (Mr., Mrs., Ms., Dr.).
• Recognize that abbreviations end with a period.
• Match full words to their shortened forms.
Materials
• "Title Shrinker" Slide Deck
• "Title Matchup" Worksheet
• Large box (The Shrinking Machine)
• Index cards with full titles
The Hook: The Shrinker 3000
Present a decorated cardboard box as the "Word Shrinking Machine."
"Class, this machine is very helpful but it's a bit of a picky eater. It only likes long words. When we put a long word in, it eats most of it and spits out a tiny, concentrated version called an abbreviation ."
Put an index card saying "Doctor" into the slot. Shake the box. Pull out a card saying "Dr." Show the class the tiny dot at the end—the period!
Instructional Steps
1
Define Abbreviations
Explain that abbreviations are shortcuts. We use them for titles when we write names to save space and time.
2
The "Punctuation Plug"
Emphasize the period. Tell students it's like a plug that keeps the rest of the word from leaking out. No period = broken abbreviation.
3
Guided Practice
Use the slides to practice calling out the "shrunk" version of names. "Mister Miller" becomes "Mr. Miller!"
Differentiation Tips
Scaffolding: Highlight the first letter of both the full word and the abbreviation to show they are the same.
Extension: Challenge students to find "Mr." or "Mrs." in a classroom book.
