Luke and His Flute

Heart Words: One & Once
"Look at the word one. It's a very strange word! We hear /w/ /ŭ/ /n/. The o is doing the work of the /w/ and /ŭ/ sounds. That's the part we learn by heart. The n is regular, and the e is silent."
Heart Part
"o" represents /wŭ/. This is an irregular phoneme-grapheme match.
Regular Part
"n" represents /n/. "e" is silent (common spelling convention).
"Now look at once. It starts just like one! The o still says /wŭ/. But look at the end—the ce makes the /s/ sound. We know 'c' can say /s/ when it's next to an 'e'."
