1 Ben and his sister Nell were busy packing their camp bags. They were heading out for three fun days of camping at King Creek. Nell was checking the tall tent poles, while Ben was rolling up their thick sleeping mats. In the driveway, their dad was lifting bags and packing the red truck. "Are we bringing the fishing rods to the creek?" asked Ben. "Yes, and we are bringing lots of snacks, too!" Dad said with a grin.
2 Soon, the family arrived in the thick woods. The cool wind was blowing through the pine trees, and fresh water was rushing past the smooth gray rocks. Ben and Nell were helping their dad set up the tent. Nell was holding the tent stakes, and Ben was pulling the ropes tight. Nearby, a sweet robin was singing from a high branch, and their little dog was barking happily.
3 Next, the kids went down to the water. Bright silver fish were jumping and splashing in the deep pool. Ben was standing still on a flat rock, casting his line into the creek. "Look, Ben!" Nell was whispering softly. "A deer is drinking by the tall grass!" They were watching the deer with wide eyes, not wishing to make a sound.
4 At sunset, the campers were resting around a warm camp fire. Dad was roasting hot dogs on long sticks, and Nell was munching on crisp chips. Yellow sparks were flying up into the dark sky, and stars were blinking above them. "Camping is the best!" Ben cheered. Before long, both kids were yawning and drifting off to sleep as the rushing creek sang its song.
