Paired Passages Planning Guide
Grade 1 ELA Next Generation Learning Standards
Paired Passages Standards & Inquiry Guide
Curriculum alignment and essential questions for paired-text comprehension
Focus: 1R1, 1R2, 1R3, 1R9
Target Next Generation ELA Standards (Grade 1)
Standard 1R1 Key Ideas & Details
Develop and answer questions about key ideas and details in a text.
1RL1 / 1RI1: Ask and answer who, what, where, when, and why using explicit text evidence.
Standard 1R2 Central Focus
Identify main topic/lesson and retell key details across texts.
1RL2 / 1RI2: Retell central message/lesson (stories) or identify the main topic and details (informational).
Standard 1R3 Text Elements
Describe story elements or connections between key points.
1RL3 / 1RI3: Describe characters, settings, major events, or connections between two individuals or events.
Standard 1R9 Core Paired Text Standard
Make connections between self, text, and other texts.
1RL9 / 1RI9: Compare and contrast characters' adventures (stories) or identify similarities/differences on the same topic.
Essential Questions (EQs)
EQ 1
How do readers find clues in a story to answer questions and prove their thinking?
Focuses on returning to the text (being a "text detective") rather than guessing.
EQ 2
What happens when we read two texts together—how are their characters, topics, or lessons alike and different?
Focuses on comparative synthesis across two distinct passages on a related theme.
EQ 3
How do I choose the single best answer when multiple options sound possible?
Guides first graders through process of elimination and verifying exact text evidence.
Enduring Understandings (Big Ideas)
- The Text Holds the Proof: Good readers always go back to find the exact words or sentences that support their answer.
- Paired Insights: Reading two texts about a similar theme helps us understand more than reading just one text alone.
- Comparing & Contrasting: Characters and topics can share similarities while still having important differences.

Instructional Practice & Assessment
Question Stems & Classroom Routine
Multiple-choice stems, student targets, and reading scaffolds
Grade 1 Practice
Student-Friendly "I Can" Targets
1 I can find key details in a passage to answer questions.
2 I can tell what two passages have in common (alike).
3 I can tell how two passages are different.
4 I can point to the words that prove my multiple-choice answer.
First-Grade Multiple-Choice Stem Bank
Single Passage Stems 1R1, 1R2
- • "In Passage 1, what does [character/subject] do first?"
- • "Where does the story in Passage 1 happen?"
- • "What is the main topic of Passage 2?"
- • "Which detail shows why [character] was happy?"
Paired Comparison Stems 1R9 (Synthesize)
- • "How are Passage 1 and Passage 2 alike?"
- • "What do BOTH characters learn at the end?"
- • "How is [Character A] different from [Character B]?"
- • "Which sentence tells about BOTH passages?"
Multiple-Choice Design Best Practices (Grade 1)
3 Choices Max
Use options (A, B, C) only. 4 choices create working-memory fatigue for early readers.
Decodable Language
Ensure answer stems use high-frequency sight words and decodable CVC/phonics patterns.
Balanced Distractors
1 correct answer, 1 detail from the wrong passage (distractor), and 1 clearly untrue option.
The 4-Step "Text Detective" Instructional Protocol
1 Read Passage 1
Highlight topic & who/what.
2 Read Passage 2
Look for what is new or alike.
3 Stem Detective
Does it ask about 1, 2, or both?
4 Prove & Bubble
Find exact proof before circling.
