Early Days: The First Nicktoons (1991)
Before 1991, TV networks mostly aired cartoons created to sell toys. Nickelodeon decided to try something completely new: give independent artists the freedom to create original cartoons. In August 1991, they launched three famous original shows called Nicktoons: Doug, Rugrats, and The Ren & Stimpy Show. These shows became massive hits because they were funny, quirky, and relatable to kids.

A Place Designed for Artists (1998)
Because the cartoons were so popular, Nickelodeon needed its own permanent creative home. In 1998, they built a custom facility in Burbank, California. It was not a typical boring office building. The campus featured bright orange walls, an outdoor courtyard with miniature golf, arcade games, and creative workspaces called pods. The studio was designed to help animators stay relaxed, playful, and inspired.

Massive Global Hits (1999–2005)
In 1999, marine biologist and animator Stephen Hillenburg pitched a cartoon about an upbeat sea sponge. SpongeBob SquarePants premiered and became one of the most successful animated franchises in history. In 2005, the studio launched Avatar: The Last Airbender, which combined serial storytelling with dynamic martial arts action. Both series earned awards and millions of fans around the world.

New Technology and the Future
Early Nicktoons were drawn by hand on clear sheets called cels. Over the years, Nickelodeon adopted digital drawing tablets and 3D computer graphics (CGI) for shows like The Loud House and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. In 2017, the Burbank studio expanded with a five-story building to support over 700 artists working on cartoons, films, and streaming series.
