DAY 1 OF 4
IMAGINATIVE WRITING
Step 1: The Blueprint
Characters, Setting, Problem & Solution
Before builders make a castle, they draw a plan. Today, we draw our story blueprint!
Today's Target: I can brainstorm the 4 magic parts of my imaginative story.
Day 1 • Part 1
Characters & Setting
WHO & WHERE
Characters
Who is in your story?
In an imaginative story, your character can be anyone or anything!
• A talking pet or magical creature
• A brave kid with a superpower
• A robot, toy, or tree that speaks!
Setting
Where & when does it happen?
Use your imagination to paint the world for your reader!
• A sunny school playground
• A secret kingdom hidden under the bed
• Outer space on a jellybean planet!
Writer Tip: Give your main character a name and one special detail!
Day 1 • Part 2
Problem & Solution
THE HEART OF THE STORY
The Problem
Uh Oh! What goes wrong?
Every great story needs a challenge to solve. Without a problem, there is no adventure!
Examples:
• An important item disappears.
• A magical spell goes wild!
• The hero gets lost before dinner.
The Solution
Hooray! How is it fixed?
The clever way your character solves the trouble or saves the day!
Examples:
• Friends work together to find it.
• The hero uses kindness or brave thinking.
• A funny trick fixes the mishap!
The Golden Match: Your solution MUST match your problem!
Day 1 • Mentor Model
Pip's Story Blueprint
CLASS EXAMPLE
Character
Pip: A tiny green dragon the size of an apple who lives secretly in Lily's pencil box!
Setting
Room 12 Art Class on a rainy Tuesday morning with paint jars clinking on the tables.
Problem
Lily's lucky golden paintbrush drops behind the tall teacher bookshelf right before the contest!
Solution
Pip folds a paper airplane, glides behind the shelf, and rolls the paintbrush back safely!
See how they connect? Small dragon + tiny space = creative solution!
Day 1 • Try It!

Ready, Set, Brainstorm! Let your imagination run wild!
DAY 2 OF 4
IMAGINATIVE WRITING
Step 2: The Introduction
Hook Your Reader & Set the Scene
A great beginning catches your reader like a fish on a line! Don't let them swim away!
Today's Target: I can write a catchy hook and introduce my character and setting.
Day 2 • The Hook
3 Fun Ways to Hook a Reader
CATCHY OPENINGS
1. Sound Effect
Start with a sound!
Make the reader hear the action right away.
"CRUNCH! Snap!"
Something stomped through the bushes.
2. Action First
Jump right in!
Start with your character already moving.
"Pip zoomed..."
Pip zoomed under the desk at lightning speed.
3. Big Question
Ask a mystery!
Make the reader curious to know more.
"Have you ever..."
Have you ever seen a dragon inside a pencil box?
Skip the Boring: Instead of "One day...", try a sound or action!
Day 2 • After the Hook
Paint the Picture
WHO & WHERE DETAILS
Introduce Your Character
Tell your reader who the hero is and what makes them unique.
Use Describing Words:
• How do they look? (tiny, emerald green)
• What are they doing? (peeking out quietly)
Describe the Setting
Help the reader imagine being right there with your hero!
Use 5 Senses Words:
• What can they see? (colorful paint jars)
• What can they hear? (rain tapping on glass)
Winning Intro Recipe: Catchy Hook + Character Name + Setting Description = Perfect Start!
Day 2 • Mentor Model
Pip's Exciting Beginning
COMPARE & LEARN
Just Okay
"Once upon a time, Pip was a little dragon. He lived in a classroom. Lily was painting."
😴 A little sleepy... no hook and no colorful details!
Super Hook!
"Rattle, rattle, CLICK!" Lily unzipped her red pencil case in Room 12. Out peeked Pip, a tiny green dragon with wings no bigger than potato chips. Rainy raindrops tapped on the window as the art contest began.
✨ Grabs our attention immediately with sound and details!

The middle of your story is where the excitement peaks! Let's watch our characters face the challenge!
Today's Target: I can use transition words and describe how my character faces the problem.
Day 3 • Story Glue
Transition Road Signs
GUIDING THE READER
First
Starts the action!
"First, the pencil case shook."
Next
Moves the adventure forward!
"Next, Lily reached for her brush."
Suddenly!
Brings a surprise or twist!
"Suddenly, it slipped down deep!"
Then
Shows what happened next!
"Then, Pip flapped his wings."
Why do we use transition words?
They keep our readers from getting lost in time!
Day 3 • Building Suspense
Don't Solve It in One Second!
THE 2-TRY RULE
1
Try #1: An Obstacle
Your character tries to solve the problem, but something gets in the way!
"Pip reached his tiny claw behind the shelf, but it was too dark and dusty to see!"
Oh no! Now what will they do?
2
Try #2: The Clever Plan
Your hero thinks fast and tries a smarter, braver idea!
"He spotted a yellow paper plane on the desk and hopped on board!"
Now the adventure really takes off!
Author Secret: Struggling makes your hero look brave and exciting!
Day 3 • Mentor Model
Pip's Daring Mission
THE MIDDLE IN ACTION
First, Lily gasped as her golden paintbrush rolled off the table and slipped behind the giant bookshelf. Next, Pip scurried out of the pencil case. He stretched his emerald tail, but the gap was too tight! Suddenly, Pip had a spark of genius. Then, he folded a scrap of blue paper into a glider and swooped into the shadows.

A happy final thought or wink to the future.
"Room 12 would never guess who the real artist was!"
Skip the Trap: Never end with "And then I woke up and it was all a dream!"
Day 4 • Mentor Model
Pip's Happy Landing
THE FINALE
With one final push of his snout, Pip rolled the golden brush across the floor right to Lily's shoe. She smiled, dipped it in bright yellow paint, and finished her sunny sunset. Lily felt proud and gave Pip a quiet wink. Tucked safely back into his cozy pencil pouch, Pip curled up and let out one tiny, smoky snore.
1. Problem Solved
Brush is back!
2. Feeling Shared
