01 / Concept
What is a Morpheme?
A morpheme is the smallest unit of meaning in language. Words are built by stacking these meaningful puzzle pieces.
Prefix
Added to the front of a word to alter direction, degree, or negation.
re-, un-, dis-, sub-
Root / Base
The central core carrying the primary definition and historical origin.
tract, struct, chron, bio
Suffix
Added to the end to indicate part of speech or condition.
-able, -tion, -ology, -ist
Over 60% of multisyllabic English words contain Greek or Latin roots!

DECONSTRUCTION
Prefix DE- Meaning: down, off, reversal
Root (Latin) STRUCT Meaning: to build, assemble
Suffix -ION Meaning: process or state of
Literal Formula: The process of taking down a built structure

High-Yield Roots to Master
When you learn one root, you unlock dozens of related academic terms.
Greek Stems
Science & Arts
CHRON time (chronology, synchronize)
GRAPH write, draw (autograph, graphic)
TELE distant, far (telescope, teleport)
Latin Stems
Law & Action
DICT say, speak (predict, contradict)
PORT carry, bear (portable, transport)
BENE good, well (benefit, benefactor)
Notice how "BENEDICTION" combines BENE (good) + DICT (speak) + ION (act) = a spoken blessing!

AUTOBIOGRAPHY
Morpheme 1
AUTO-
Greek: self / same
Morpheme 2
BIO-
Greek: life / living
Morpheme 3
-GRAPH-Y
Greek: written account
Full Translation: A written account of a person's life by themselves!
Template Protocol
05 / Strategy
The 4-Step Dissection Protocol
Follow these steps every time you encounter an unfamiliar multisyllabic word:
1
Strip Affixes
Remove any obvious prefixes (re-, un-, dis-) and suffixes (-ly, -tion, -ment) first.
2
Isolate Core Root
Identify the surviving root stem and determine its Greek, Latin, or Old English origin.
3
Assemble Literal Meaning
Piece together the definitions of the prefix, root, and suffix like an equation.
4
Contextual Test
Fit your reconstructed definition back into the original sentence to verify logic.

Lesson Plan: Word Within a Word
Morphological Analysis & Greek/Latin Root Dissection
Grades 6–9 ELA
Duration: 50–60 Minutes
Target Standard: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.6.4.B, L.7.4.B, L.8.4.B (Greek & Latin roots/affixes)
Lesson Focus: Structural analysis of prefixes, roots, and suffixes in academic text
Materials Needed: Morpheme Matrix Slides, Dissection Template, Root Bank Reference Sheet
Learning Objectives (SWBAT):
- Identify and isolate prefixes, roots, and suffixes within tier-two/three academic vocabulary.
- Determine literal word meaning by combining individual morpheme definitions.
- Use the 4-step dissection protocol to decode unfamiliar vocabulary in context.
Essential Questions:
- How does knowing smaller root words unlock hundreds of unfamiliar terms?
- Why do authors and scientists rely on Greek and Latin roots to name concepts?
- How can morphemic analysis verify or refine context clues?
Instructional Sequence & Facilitation
Phase 1: Hook & Conceptual Launch (10 Mins) Slides 1–2
Display Slide 1. Challenge students with a seemingly intimidating 15-letter word on the board (e.g., DECONSTRUCTION). Ask: "Who can spot at least two hidden words or word fragments inside this giant?"
Teacher Script: "English is like Lego blocks. Once you recognize the standard building blocks—prefixes, roots, and suffixes—even the longest words in science and literature stop feeling mysterious."
Phase 2: Word Surgery Modeling & Protocol (15 Mins) Slides 3–4
Walk through Slide 3 (dissecting DECONSTRUCTION) and Slide 4 (Greek vs. Latin roots). Introduce the 4-step protocol: 1) Strip affixes, 2) Isolate root stem, 3) Synthesize literal meaning, 4) Test in sentence context.
Key Check for Understanding: Have students do a fist-to-five finger signal on whether a suffix alters the primary meaning or the part of speech.

Phase 3: Guided Partner Practice (10 Mins) Slide 5
Project Slide 5 (AUTOBIOGRAPHY). Pair students to complete the 3-part breakdown. Circulate to check that students articulate how each morpheme contributes: AUTO (self) + BIO (life) + GRAPH (write). Emphasize that literal meanings often read like concise mathematical equations.
