1 Stage 1: Arriving at the Trailhead (Warm-Up)
10 Minutes
Gather the class on the rug. Announce that today they are not just students—they are Word Rangers entering the dense Word Wilderness to track down wild nouns, active verbs, and descriptive adjectives.
Ranger Prompt (Say to students): "Explorers, grab your binoculars! Look around this room. Everything you see, touch, or name is a noun—our wilderness targets. Tell me one noun you spot! Next, what can that target DO? (e.g., The teacher *talks*, the clock *ticks*). Those actions are verbs. Finally, what does it look like? (e.g., *tall*, *shiny*). Those are adjectives!"
2 Stage 2: Mapping the Word Wilderness (Direct Instruction)
15 Minutes
Create a 3-column anchor chart on the board with the headings: Nouns (The Targets), Verbs (The Actions), and Adjectives (The Details).

3 Stage 3: Tracking in Pack (Guided Practice)
15 Minutes
Model sentence building using the anchor chart. Write a basic sentence: The bear climbs. Ask: "How can we make this sentence more vivid using adjectives?" (e.g., The hungry brown bear climbs.)
Spotting Misconceptions:
Students often confuse action-oriented adjectives (e.g., "running water") with verbs. Clarify that if it describes the noun, it is an adjective.
Ideal Guided Response:
"The muddy hiker splashes through the stream." Ensure all 3 elements are correctly highlighted.
4 Stage 4: Logging the Expedition (Independent Practice)
15 Minutes
Distribute the Expedition Logbook Worksheet. Students work independently to complete their tracking guides. Instruct them to use color-coded highlighters if possible (Green = Nouns, Blue = Verbs, Yellow = Adjectives) to reinforce the visual taxonomy.
5 Stage 5: Basecamp Check-In (Wrap-Up & Assessment)
5 Minutes
Distribute the Trail Marker Exit Ticket. Students have 5 minutes to complete the quick check-in to assess individual proficiency before leaving class. Use this to form intervention groups for tomorrow.
Ranger Differentiation Strategies
Scaffolded Trails (Support)
- Provide a small visual "word bank cards" with picture symbols for nouns and verbs.
- Have students write sentences using a fixed sentence frame: "The [adjective] [noun] [verb]."
Advanced Trails (Extension)
- Encourage advanced learners to find adverbs (describing how verbs are performed) to expand their sentences further.
- Ask students to write a mini 3-sentence wilderness adventure story using at least 5 adjectives, 5 nouns, and 4 verbs.
