Story Passage
Read carefully before answering the questions on page 2
Ben and Ed had to go to the shop to get a new strap for Gab the bat so she could strum again.
On the way, there was a POP and a SPLAT. The van came to a stop.
They got out of the van, and the tire was flat.
Ben said, “No! Now we are stuck. The tire is split, and a tire jack will not fit in that spot.”
Ben said, “We should try to thrust and lift the van.”
“I will try,” said Ed. “But I do not want to squish my hands.”
“We need more help,” said Ben.
“Yes,” said Ed. “We need three pals to help us.”
Just then, a brown squirrel ran on top of the van. “Where did that squirrel come from?” asked Ed.
The squirrel called down, “I can help you! I am Super Squirrel! I have super skills and can help you lift the van.”
Ed said, “I did not see you sprint over here. Did you come through the grass?”
Super Squirrel said, “I came from the shrubs!”
Ben said, “I am glad you would like to help, but you are too little to help lift the van.”
“Watch me!” said Super Squirrel. “I will lift the van and then scram.” With a strut, he went over to the flat tire.
He said to Ed and Ben, “On three, we will all lift the van.”
Super Squirrel said, “I will scrunch up and go under the tire to lift it. It will not squash me.”
“We should not let him do this,” said Ben.
With a shrug, Ed said, “Who knows? Let him give it a shot.”
The squirrel went down by the tire and said, “Do not stress. We can do this! One... two... three!” They did their best to lift the van.
With a shrill yell, Super Squirrel said, “Yes!” He thrust the tire out of the spot.
With a grin, the squirrel said, “That was a thrill! It looks like the tire is in shreds. Do you have a good tire and a jack to put it on with?”
“Yes, we have a good tire to put on the van,” said Ben.
“Please call if you need my help again,” said Super Squirrel.
Ed asked, “How did you lift the van? It made my hands throb.”
The squirrel said, “I am Super Squirrel, and I have super skills! I must scram. Call if you need help again,” the squirrel said.
Ben asked, “Where did he go? He was such a big help.”
“That was Super Squirrel,” said Ed. “He gave us super help!”
